Skinny jeans: dead trend or dead gorgeous? - The Boar

Here's your 9 News update for Sat 19 Jun 2021:

F ashion is a beautiful way of representing who you are and making you feel confident in your own skin. For me, fashion is something that I gravitate towards, mainly because of the freedom it can provide, alongside the accessibility of finding inspiration of how to style the new 'big baggy jeans'.

Once upon a time, skinny jeans were a staple and default alternative to any other trouser, thanks to icons such as Kate Moss . But this staple item has lost its iconicity in our wardrobes. For example, my data collection of 50 Warwick students shows that 37% of people do not own skinny jeans anymore, and over 26% own them but choose to avoid wearing them. To replenish the loss of this once fail-safe item, Warwick students would rather choose a mom, straight-leg, flare, or baggy style of jean. In fact, 76% of students surveyed own and wear these fits.

Something that will always direct the movement towards and away from specific styles is, of course, trends. 42% of Warwick students believe that it is mainly trends that diverge us from picking out skinny jeans for our outfit. Celebrities such as Bella Hadid have been styling baggy jeans in a variety of ways – either paired with tailored coats and stilettos or channelling the grungy look with oversized t-shirts and sneakers. An article in Vogue states that "the baggy jean gives any outfit a cool, effortless feel" compared to the "dressed up and streamline effect" skinny jeans give.

Many people dislike skinny jeans because they are uncomfortable and it is difficult to find the perfect size. Despite plus-size women representing 68% of shoppers, plus-size clothing is more often a small percentage of the respective availability and range of styles. Skinny jeans leave little room for body change (which is inevitable for everyone due to many emotional and physical changes) and rarely fit right. Over 60% of people surveyed are against wearing skinny jeans due to the fit never being right, the lack of comfort, and that they are simply too tight.

The fit of clothing is really impactful on how we feel within ourselves, and that often portrays our visual appearance. When I feel comfortable and stylish, I imagine that I portray positive and confident energy compared to days where I'm wearing something uncomfortable. Skinny jeans seemingly reduce body confidence as inferred by several Warwick students.

90 Day Fiancé: Amira Reacts To Plastic Surgery Rumors After Speculation

After seeing Amira Lollysa's new picture, many 90 Day Fiancé fans thought she had plastic surgery to enhance her breasts. The 28-year-old beauty addressed the speculation and said that every woman is beautiful with or without surgery. After being featured on 90 Day Fiancé season 8 alongside Andrew Kenton, Amira has been showing off a drastically different avatar in her social media pictures. Earlier, she posted a selfie in which she looked quite skinny, and her lips looked bigger than before.

After comparing Amira's before and after photos, some 90 Day Fiancé viewers called her a " blowup doll " and were convinced that she had fillers to make her lips puffier. Others got concerned for Amira's health because she looked dangerously skinny. 90 Day Fiancé fans thought that she's probably starving herself to look thinner in order to establish herself as an Instagram model. Most recently, she posted a glamorous photo in an olive green colored dress and displayed her ample cleavage.

Since Amira's cleavage looked bigger than before, many 90 Day Fiancé fans asked her whether she had a boob job. The French-Egyptian beauty is now responding to the plastic surgery rumors. She took to her Instagram Stories, as shared by the 90 Day Fiancé Fanatic 2 fan page, and claimed that she didn't have breast augmentation surgery. Amira affirmed that she doesn't have anything to hide. In fact, she believes that women are beautiful with or without surgery. It is possible that since Amira has lost a significant amount of weight from her waist, her chest is looking heavier than before.

The 55-year-old meemaw recently got breast reduction and lift surgery and went from DDD to DD cup size. Although she was really disappointed to see her smaller boobs initially, she now seems pretty happy with her new boob size. Recently, Angela partied with her friends in Los Angeles and showed off her figure in a young and chic style. In another photo, she wore a low neck top, applied stunning makeup and tied her hair in a sleek low ponytail. The same picture suggested that the 90 Day Fiancé celeb still has not received her most anticipated facelift.

A Dermatologist's Guide To Fixing Dry Winter Skin | BEAUTY/crew

Winter is a gift and a curse. A gift when it comes to finally having a reason to break out our expensive candle , tracksuit and pasta collections, of course, but a cruel, cruel curse in the dry skin department.

And if we're honest, even the cosiest scent , outfit and pasta dish combo won't dull the pain of dry, itchy, angry skin.

So in a bid to this year skip the winter skin woes we're plagued with every time the chill hits, we called out to Dr. Michelle Rodrigues, dermatologist and Director of Chroma Dermatology, Pigment and Skin of Colour Centre, for help.

Here's her advice for keeping your complexion (and beyond) comfortable this winter…

Whether you're trying to avoid or remedy the situation, the path to success (AKA healthy, happy, hydrated skin) looks the same.

First, we're sorry to be the bearers of bad news, but yes, even in winter, scalding hot water is a no. "Avoid hot showers and baths as they pull moisture from the skin," says Rodrigues. "Make sure the showers are short, ideally three minutes or less, and keep the water as cool as possible."

And while you're in your (repeat after us) time-capped, lukewarm shower, you'll want to reach for gentle cleansing formulas. "Avoid soap, and choose soap-free products without fragrance to help hydrate the skin while cleansing it," she confirms. FYI, the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is dynamite for refreshing the skin whilst keeping hydration intact – it's a deliciously milky gel, formulated with three essential, skin-loving ceramides that won't leave skin tight or dry at all .

Then once you're out, it's hydration time, no matter what actual time it is: "Moisturise! In the morning and evening," Rodrigues recommends. You can still protect your skin once your rinse-and-replenish routine is wrapped up, too: "Think about putting a humidifier in the room if you use heaters," she says.

But while we'd love to say that downing those eight glasses a day is helping your skin's hydration levels, unfortunately, it's working more wonders inside than out. "Drinking more water is great for your overall health but won't moisturise your skin," Rodrigues confirms.

Moral of the story: keep up your water-drinking game, but know that it definitely won't do the noble work of a topical moisturiser.

Despite the 'exfoliate everything' craze that's been thriving as of late, Rodrigues leans toward a less-is-more approach, unless your complexion really calls for it. "Contrary to popular belief, most people don't really need to exfoliate," she explains.

"However, some people with oily skin or black heads and white heads may benefit from using moisturisers or cleansers containing exfoliating agents like salicylic acid or glycolic acid."

Think those ingredients won't play nice with dry skin? The CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser and Smoothing Cream combo was designed to gently remove dead cells with salicylic acid, AKA the ultimate exfoliating ingredient without draining skin of moisture. Hallelujah.

We all tend to experience (and whine about) damned dry skin once winter hits, but there's no doubt that there comes a point where some cases are more than just seasonal dryness.

"If your skin remains dry and scaly despite using soap free, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers and you are using them regularly, but your dry skin persists, it may be worth visiting your doctor to find out if there is an underlying cause for your dry skin," Rodrigues explains. "An under-functioning thyroid gland (called hypothyroidism) is one example of an internal problem that can cause dry skin."

"Also, if your skin is red, irritated, itchy or sensitive, it may be worth seeing your doctor or dermatologist to work out the underlying cause and solutions that will relieve your symptoms."

You wouldn't throw on a light jacket in the dead of winter, so don't rely on a light moisturiser either. "It's best to use creams rather than lotions if your skin is dry because creams stay on the skin and penetrate the layers of the skin more effectively," says Rodrigues.

There's a pretty simple way to tell the two apart, too: "If something comes out of a pump-pack, it's usually a lotion. As the weather warms up again [later in the year], lotions provide lighter moisturising," she says. That checks out; the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion (our fave lightweight, oil-free and fast-absorbing hydrator) will definitely be back in our rotation come spring.

For now, though, it's all about cream formulas, which Rodrigues confirms are "usually packaged in tubes and tubs." Our favourite tube and tub pairing, you ask? The CeraVe Reparative Hand Cream (a deeply moisturising, fast-absorbing skin saviour) for rough, dry hands and the CeraVe Moisturising Cream (a luxuriously rich and thick cream formulated with three essential ceramides, glycerine and hyaluronic acid) for skin on the body.

The ingredients in the formula are as crucial as the type, as well, and Rodrigues says it's hard to beat ceramides in the nourishing arena. "Ceramides are an important ingredient in the outermost layer of the skin. These help to optimise the barrier function of the skin and lock moisture into the skin too."

Her tip? Trust practical formulas (over schmancy scented options) and professional advice.

"Always look for pharmacy-grade moisturiser [as they tend to be fragrance-free] – something that smells amazing is unlikely to be good for your skin in the long-term as it has a chance of causing skin allergies down the track. And ask your doctor or dermatologist for advice on which ones are best for you if you are not sure."

Some shorts are too short for shorts – The Free Weekly

Q. I just saw an article in The New York Times, saying that the new look in men's shorts is  very  short. That sounds bad enough, but the ones they showed ranged in price from $35 up to $790. Does any of this make sense?

A. Yes, I saw that same article, and I, too, had trouble with it. Our clothes – and especially our summer clothes – should be: age-appropriate, comfortable, attractive and affordable. Most of the shorts they pictured did not appear to be any of these.

They looked too short for anyone other than a teenager. I believe the most attractive length for men's shorts is mid-thigh, a few inches above the knee; typically, this means not shorter than a 7- to 9-inch inseam. It's hard to think of an occasion where a skimpy 3-inch inseam (such as one pair shown in that article) might be appropriate. I would be embarrassed to be escorted by a man wearing shorts that so closely resembled underwear.

The best way to know how shorts will fit (besides trying them on) is by knowing their inseam measurement. My feeling is that 7-, 8-, or 9-inch inseams are perfect for general casual wear. If, you are buying shorts for more active sports activities, such as running or tennis, and find the extra length bothersome, you might go as short as a 5-inch inseam. Just make sure that what you are buying suits not only your age and the occasion, but also your body. If you think your legs are too heavy or too skinny, choose shorts with a longer inseam. Why show off what you aren't happy about?

To be sure that your shorts flatter your body type, pay attention to the length and also to the width of the leg opening. Try to find shorts that follow the line of your legs. Shorts should not be too wide or skin-tight; you should be able to move around comfortably in them. Often it helps to look for "slim-fit" on the label; it can make all the difference. Most brands offer free shipping and returns, so it's easy to try on a few pairs at home; then only keep the ones you like. Once you find something you like, order another pair or two in different colors; you'll be set for the summer.

Also, the prices seemed absurd. Half of the shorts in the article cost $200 or more. The truth is that the ones I liked the best were $35 from Champion. Stores and online sites offer a wide range of shorts that won't break the bank in various fabrics, colors, patterns, and styles: Dockers, $40; Gap, $45; Nautica, $50; Everlane, $50; Bonobos, $55; Orvis, $80; Lululemon, $88, and others.

In addition to shorts that you buy, for casual settings there is nothing wrong with using that old method of creating a pair by finding in your closet pants or jeans that fit in the seat the way you like them to, and cutting off the legs (not too short). Then, either wear them as is with a frayed hem on the legs, or have your tailor/dry cleaner finish off the bottom hem. Start off with these do-it-yourself cut-off shorts somewhat on the too-long side. You can keep cutting them a bit shorter – just a little at a time – until you reach the length that's just right.

Versatile shorts can be dressed up or down, depending on what you wear on top. Your choice can be as formal and traditional as an open-at-the-neck dress shirt worn tucked-in with a nice braided leather belt, or as informal and relaxed as a polo, T-shirt, or hoodie worn untucked. Other possible accessories (sweater, deck shoes or sneakers, a pair of no-show socks, perhaps a hat, etc.) may be added as long as they are appropriately casual and in step with the rest of this low-key look.

Review: La Passione Duo Jersey Woman | road.cc

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The La Passione Duo Women's Jersey is a lightweight, breathable jersey that's made from high quality materials and feels lush to wear. It's great that this comfy performance jersey is also available in several stunning colours.

La Passione has expanded its female-specific offerings to include the Duo jersey. It comes in a selection of beautiful two tone options: Graphite/Burgundy (as seen here), Natural Sand, or Cherry/Blue.

Various blends of polyester and elastane have been used in different locations. The fabric feels almost silky smooth, and it's also super thin.

The stretchy material gives a skin-tight fit – the jersey sits close, but is still comfortable for longer outings. The low-cut collar sits flush against the skin.

The downside of the lightweight fabric is that it's slightly see through, so your bra could be visible, depending on its shade.

The sleeves are laser cut at the end, and there's no stitching here or and silicone grippers. This is great as there are no pressure points or irritations, but the fit needs to be spot on for the sleeves to stay put while riding.

Following La Passione's sizing guide puts me at the bottom end of a size medium, and though I found the fit spot on around my chest, the sleeves didn't quite hold my proportionally narrow arms tightly enough. They shifted upwards, creating some bagginess over the shoulders. Sizing down to the small, the fit was much improved. The sleeves hugged my arms and were unnoticeable while riding.

Given the stretchiness of the material, if you're on the edge of sizes and have particularly skinny arms I'd say it's worth sizing down. The size small still fitted me well across my 88cm chest – it wasn't too tight at all.

Cheryl looks stunning in cream as she returns to Instagram with new look - Mirror Online

However, deciding now was the right time to return, Cheryl pulled out all the stops as she took on the Mystery Box Challenge with Feel vitamin company - of which she is an ambassador.

With her chocolate-brown locks pulled into a gorgeous bun, Cheryl opens the box to answer the first question, telling fans she never leaves home without her lipgloss.

Wearing a skin-tight cream vest and perfectly coiffed top knot, she goes on to reveal she takes six vitamin supplements a day in reference to her role as ambassador.

Her focus now is on things that make her happy rather than just working for the sake of it and she refuses to do anything that leaves her feeling "stressed or nervous".

When asked if she would return to work in the same way she had been before, she told Marie Claire magazine: "I'm not doing that to myself again, no. I'm only going to do stuff that makes me truly happy.

Discussing body image and clothes sizes with Marie Claire , Cheryl notes: "I think through your 20s you struggle a bit with that – trying to fit into an image."

"You just realise how little some of the stuff you cared about – and I mean, really cared – actually matters," she commented. "It just dissipates. Like, I'm going to be forty in two years."

Cheryl explains that she has become less concerned about worries surrounding herself as she focuses on her child, saying it's "your responsibility" as a parent.

She added: "You just become second in the family. And it's for all the right reasons in my case. You think to yourself, oh my god, I really cared about that? Wow."
