Amazon Fashion Hidden Gems: GLAMOUR Editor's Picks | Glamour UK
Serial shopper (hence the job), mental health advocate, SUPER foodie and unashamed reality TV obsessive
Even though summer is apparently over and it's tipping it down with rain (cry), it's still pretty humid out there. It took approx. one days' worth of warm weather for me to begin a search for stick-resistant clothing that I'd feel even a *smidgen* cooler in while working from home. And after ordering an unhealthy number of H&M summer dresses and scouring the Net-A-Porter sale , I made a pitstop at somewhere unexpected. Amazon . Told you it was unexpected.
Best 60s cars: the 30 greatest cars of the 1960s | Auto Express
Millions of families got their first taste of motoring in the 1960s, with car ownership on the rise thanks to low unemployment, rising wages and an increasing sense of optimism. London finally emerged from the shadows of the Second World War, cementing itself as the epicentre of fashion, music and culture.
From Mary Quant's mini skirt gracing Carnaby Street to the sound of the Beatles playing from bedrooms across the nation, there's a sense that Britain found its groove in the Swinging Sixties. England certainly had the world at its feet in 1966.
However, the Mini wasn't the only British car capable of conquering the world. In 1961, Jaguar unveiled the E-Type, a sports car so alluring, Enzo Ferrari described it as the most beautiful car in the world. It will come as no surprise to discover that both the Mini and the E-Type make our list of the best cars of the 1960s.
Around a third of the cars to have made our list of best cars of the 60s were made in Britain, while the others add a touch of American and European style and glamour.
It may have been designed, developed and launched in 1959, but the British Motor Corporation (BMC) Mini is as synonymous with the 1960s as Twiggy, Waterloo Sunset and Geoff Hurst's hattrick. With sales of 1.0-litre and bubble cars booming following the Suez Crisis, Alec Issignonis was tasked with designing what BMC chief Leonard Lord referred to as a "proper small car".
It was an instant success. Even before Big Ben chimed to mark the beginning of the decade, the Mini had cemented itself as BMC's best-selling model. Celebrity endorsement, a classless image and success at the Monte Carlo Rally helped it to become a British icon.
Launched in 1962, the MGB bettered the outgoing MGA in just about every department. More powerful, faster, roomier and fitted with the kind of creature comforts that were absent from its 1950s predecessor. The quintessentially British styling helped it to become the world's best-selling sports car.
Rear-wheel drive, an effective suspension system and front disc brakes meant that the original MGB was great to drive. A 1.8-litre engine developing 94bhp delivered just enough performance to entertain. Production continued until 1980, by which time it had spawned the Pininfarina-designed GT fastback of 1967 and the MGB GT V8 of 1973.
School's out, graduation's over but a Central Neighborhood school looms long and large | News |
This is a mid-20th century aerial view of the Central School complex when the Junior and Senior High were still located there. The left-hand, west wing opened in 1937, the right-hand, east wing in 1922. The image looks north, with West Bay to the top and right of the photo.
This is the "Swing Out" of 1949. This tradition had juniors lead the senior class out of the 1922 Central School building for their graduation ceremony under the pines along Seventh Street.
TRAVERSE CITY — As graduation season comes to a close, one Traverse City school rises above all others when counting the number of years graduates have graced its doorways.
That winner is not one building, but a series of buildings that for 144 years have continuously occupied a Central Neighborhood city block.
Today the home of Central Grade School — the oldest standing building — dates back to 1922. But the first school built between Seventh and Eighth, and Pine and Wadsworth Streets opened in 1877. The structures themselves have come and gone, but thousands of high school, junior high and grade school students have grown from childhood to young adulthood on that land.
For some families, Central roots run particularly deep. Dan Coulter's mother attended Central for both junior and senior high school. He and his brother attended grade school there, as do his children. Karl Keene went to junior high at Central, and both of his parents and one grandparent graduated high school from Central buildings.
Those earlier graduates most likely participated in the "Swing Out," a cherished tradition of juniors leading seniors onto the shaded north lawn.
"Our teachers allowed us to pull our chairs up to the windows and quietly watch the graduation ceremony unfold before us. Juniors ushered the graduates to white wooden chairs under "The Pines!" What an inspiration as the classes passed by us, the choir sang, and the speakers spoke. We envisioned ourselves in a few years doing the same. That building, that block of land are, indeed, beloved," Cinda Kinney Simmons recalled.

Women learn how to change a flat tyre on Toyota's new city cars with Gals Garage workshops |
The first Gals Garage Tyre Safety Workshop of 2021 was held on the 22nd May, hosted by a total of 15 women. Although all Covid-19 regulations had been taken into account, motoring journalist Vuyi Mpofu, opted to take further precautions by hosting the event over two four-hour sessions, and in different venues, thereby giving guests the added comfort of knowing their health had been taking into consideration.
Supported by Toyota Motors South Africa (TMSA), the May 2021 Gals Garage Tyre Safety Workshop would not only allow guests to simulate a flat tyre scenario but would also afford them to test drive any of the Toyota vehicles used for the experience. These included an Urban Cruiser, two Agya's, or a Starlet.
The Tyre Safety Workshop, aimed at women, was held as a celebration of Mothers' Day. Kicking off with an interactive discussion about tyre rotation, wheel alignment and wheel balancing, the important topic of knowing how to change a tyre led to a few of the ladies relating personal stories about the inconveniences and dangers of being stuck on the side of the road.
"It used to be safe to ask a stranger to assist you in changing your flat tyre, but times have changed, so it is to every woman's benefit and safety to know how to do so yourself", Vuyi said.
These include pulling out of traffic as slowly as is safely possible, parking on a flat surface where possible, ensuring that the handbrake is engaged (either in gear in manual transmission or Park if in an automatic). "In some instances, it is advisable to place a brick in front or behind one of the other tyres to further secure the vehicle," Vuyi mentioned, "but it is imperative that you remove these before you leave so as not to cause damage to another motorist's vehicle, particularly at night when visibility is generally reduced".
Another vital element under discussion was identifying the optimal position to place the red reflective triangle, which serves as a warning for other motorists, as well as learning the correct names of each of the tools required to successfully change a flat tyre - wheel spanner, nut-lock, car jack, reflective red triangle, spare tyre.
It came as a surprise to some of the ladies that all cars have a car 'jack-point' and that it is the safest location to position the car jack. By running their fingers along the edge of the bottom of the car's body, the ladies discovered either one or two jack-points positioned either a short distance behind the front wheels or positioned a short distance in front of the rear wheels.
"It is important to align the jack with the car-jack point. If you jack the vehicle at any other point, the car's own weight may cause damage to its frame, or the jack may slip off, causing the vehicle to crash to the ground. Either way, this could result in serious injury to yourself and expensive damage to the car," Vuyi mentioned.
