Leyna Bloom Talks Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover and Being Trans - Variety

Before publicly revealing she was trans, actress Leyna Bloom was terrified of people finding out about her true identity.

But in 2014, she came out as part of a magazine shoot featuring her and other trans women. Five years later, Bloom made history as the first trans woman of color to star in a movie at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, “ Port Authority ,” is a romantic drama about a romance between a trans woman (Bloom) in the New York City ballroom scene and a straight cisgender man (Fionn Whitehead) who comes to the city trying to run from his troubled past.

“Port Authority” is currently in select theaters and available on demand. Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer. Bloom met the legendary filmmaker on the “Port Authority” set. “He said, ‘We need to have these conversations. These are the kind of stories I want to tell. There are the kind of stories I need to give my name to,’” recalls Bloom, who also appeared in the final season of “Pose.”

And next month, Bloom will make history again as the first trans woman of color to be featured in the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated. “This is how things are now being intersectional with fashion and gender and sexuality and now sports,” Bloom says. “It’s so much going on in sports alone with gender identity and trans women trying to be in sports, but to have a trans woman as a symbol of beauty in swimsuits on a beach in comparison to other icons, like Tyra Banks and Giselle and Heidi Klum, it’s a testament of what’s happening right now in the world and what’s going to happen in the future.

“I think it’s just a powerful time right now. I’m so happy Sports Illustrated wanted to have the nerve to really say, ‘We got to have this moment, and if you don’t like it, you can go somewhere else.’”

Amid his divorce from Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian, Kanye West is rumored to be dating model Irina Shayk. Kim officially filed for divorce in late February after months of speculation regarding the state of their marriage. After Kanye made several inappropriate remarks about their relationship and her family, Kim realized the marriage was no longer working. Despite the end of the marriage, the estranged couple plan on co-parenting their four children together.

Rumors of a Kimye divorce began after fans noticed he wasn't at Kim's extravagant private island 40th birthday celebration. Since then, the pair were rarely seen together, with Kim never sharing anything about him on social media. Divorce speculation reignited after Kanye was noticeably absent from the family's Christmas gatherings. Fans didn't want to believe the rumors until it was confirmed by several media outlets that the infamous couple had filed for divorce. However, it seems Kayne moves on quickly, as he is already rumored to be in another relationship.

But who is Kanye's rumored girlfriend, Irina Shayk? Irina is well-known for being one of the fashion world's most famous supermodels. She has appeared on the runways for Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs, Moschino, Burberry, Versace, Givenchy, and so many more. Irina was born and raised in Russia before she moved to the United States as an adult to pursue a career in modeling. In 2007, Irina was the face of the luxury lingerie brand Intimissimi. The same year, she made her debut in the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue that skyrocketed her to fame (via Pop Culture ). In the past, Irina has also modeled for the Guess 2009 campaign, as well as the Victoria Secret catalog. Since then, you cannot go to a fashion show without seeing Irina on the runway.

While the rumors of a relationship between Irina and Kanye have yet to be confirmed, the romance doesn't seem so shocking. Irina is in the fashion industry, which Kanye loves and keeps up with on a daily basis. Plus, the pair has a past, as she appeared in one of his music videos more than a decade ago. Irina and Kanye may be the next power couple.

'Port Authority' Star Leyna Bloom Takes Pride in All That She Does and Continues Her

EBONY: You're used to performing as a dancer, but when did you decide you were interested in acting and how did you go about that process?

Leyna Bloom: Honestly, I just always felt like there are so many amazing stories in the world that I love and that I could also tell from my unique experience. I'm lucky that I have the opportunity to work. And it's not just acting for me. The fact that I can go out into the world and be fortunate enough to take up space to do anything…there aren't many places where I can do that. I hope that I'm challenging and inviting people to write and see things differently.

In Port Authority , there was a detectable level of comfort. What is your technique when it's time to step in front of the camera and what are your thoughts on the importance of visibility?

I do! I feel like it's still present in how I walk, just a significance in my lines and form. I hope to do more projects that involve body movement, whether that's combat or dance.  It's one of the things I'm looking forward to in my acting career.

Your “glam ma” used to be a beauty queen, correct? What have you learned from and about her?

For quite some time, terms that are popular in the gay community have found their way into pop culture and everyday vocabulary. What are your thoughts on the slang being adapted?

Do you think having to kick into survival mode for so many reasons give people the impression that there's this angst and gloom instead of hope?

"It's good. Isn't it grand? Isn't it great? Isn't it swell? Isn't it fun? Isn't it? Nowadays... After a year in quarantine, the answer is YES! [sic]."

Brinkley also revealed who appeared in her photos. In addition to her beautiful children Sailor and Jack, the pictures also included her friends Donna Karan, Katie Couric, and Drew Barrymore.

Brinkley has been delighting her fans lately with her outfits. On May 27, she shared a throwback picture of herself in rollerskates. The image showed her tanned and smiling from ear to ear.

Brinkley also showed off her youthfulness with a stunning image she shared on Instagram last March. She caught attention when she kicked her legs up into the air and sipped Bellissima Prosecco.

During the 1970s, Brinkley rose to prominence as a model after a photographer discovered her. The beauty appeared in three consecutive Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues beginning in 1979.
