This is Pop [Netflix] Review: Documentary on Music Brings the Hits | IndieWire

It’s inevitable that a documentary about music will get you thinking about rhythm. What’s not always a given is that a project will be able to match the energy of whatever artist they’re profiling.

It’s a problem that “ This Is Pop ” manages to avoid. The eight-part series, newly available on Netflix after airing on CTV in Canada earlier this spring, keeps a tempo worthy of its wide array of subjects.

Touring American Pop Music by Way of the Writers Who Have Addressed It - The New York Times

"How much history," the critic Robert Palmer asked in "Deep Blues" (1981), "can be transmitted by pressure on a guitar string?"

Eric Weisbard quotes that question in his new book, "Songbooks: The Literature of American Popular Music," and he patiently investigates the many ways music critics and other writers have sought to answer it.

Are Classics Actually Better Than Today's Pop?

The classics are classics for a reason.

Many people often think our parents' music from the 60s and 70s to be generally better than the pop music of today.

Pop music today has the advantage of utilizing techniques and trends that have been used and perfected for decades. A particularly successful example is Harry Styles' "Fine Line," an album that has received much critical and commercial acclaim since its release in 2019.

'This Is Pop' Netflix Review: Stream It or Skip It?

Take a ride back to the 1990s with the first episode of This is Pop (Netflix), an eight-ep run that will look for the moments when pop found new voices and birthed new trends out of thin air.

Opening Shot: Radio static crackles over a title card drenched in the color palette of 1991 MTV, and the harmonized countdown from “Uhh Ahh,” Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony single from that year, begins.

Usher's Claim That T-Pain Ruined Music Is Wrong | LEVEL

I don't consciously seek out T-Pain's music, but I don't smash a radio when his songs come on either . It's music that, with a few exceptions, isn't for me. When I encounter it, I recognize that I've probably walked into the wrong room.

The first red flag in the story is the part about a flight attendant summoning T-Pain on behalf of Usher — when both friends are already sitting in first class. Though setting aside that what Usher did was tacky and insensitive, the more important observation is that he was wrong.

So Many Me: Michael League on Pop Music, Human Observation, & Debut Solo Record - Atwood

M ichael League is a group animal. As bandleader and bassist of the multitudinous Snarky Puppy, a member of the world music supergroup Bokanté, guitarist and singer in David Crosby's Lighthouse band, and more, League is known for his cross-genre collaborations and his production skills.

Most often thought of as a guitarist, League took a different route; So Many Me is synth heavy and punctuated by resonant hand percussion filling the role of a drum set. It's also League's first time as a lead vocalist, and he uses his smooth tenor to great effect.
