First 10 acts qualify for Eurovision Song Contest final - ABC News

"We are back, and boy does that feel good!" said Dutch presenter Chantal Janzen after 2019's Dutch winner, Duncan Laurence, opened the show.

Out of the 16 acts who performed, 10 progressed to Saturday's grand final: Norway, Israel, Russia, Azerbaijan, Malta, Lithuania, Cyprus, Sweden, Belgium and Ukraine.

The show had trademark Eurovision elements — bombastic beats, big voices, power ballads, flamboyant costumes and some dress reveals.

Russian singer Manizha emerged in a red boiler suit from an oversized traditional dress, while Israeli performer Eden Alene shrugged off her white mini dress to uncover a skin-tight black costume.

In Rotterdam, Lithuanian pop-rock band The Roop got the Eurovision party started with the fittingly titled song "Discoteque" and its opening lines: "OK, I feel the rhythm. Something's going on here." They can now extend that feeling straight to Saturday's final.

The competition, which this year spotlights contestants performing 39 songs from nations across Europe as well as Australia and Israel, is one of the largest events staged in Europe since the pandemic began. It is taking place as the continent begins to tentatively emerge from lockdowns and infection-control restrictions.

Some fans waiting to get in waved national flags. Others dressed up for the show known for its popularity among the LGBTQ community.

Geert van den Berg attended in a purple dress and white wig accessorized with a red feather. His partner, Roberto, wore a short skirt made up of the flags of the participating nations.

"Eurovision is very important for me. We, my partner and me ... this is the 10th time we are going to Eurovision," he said. "We like it so much because all countries are together. It's always a party, it's always fun."

What Green Lantern Could've Looked Like In Justice League Snyder Cut

Though the DC Extended Universe still hasn't delivered a Green Lantern movie, the characters were pivotal to Snyder's long-term Justice League franchise plans. The director recently revealed that John Stewart would have had a much larger role in the cancelled Justice League 2 and Justice League 3 , where he would have aided the other heroes in the Knightmare future and eventually recruited the rest of the Green Lantern Corps to join the battle against Justice League villain Darkseid . The Snyder Cut still retains a few Green Lantern references, including one ring-bearer who appears in flashbacks.

A stunning new piece of fan art from Instagram-based artist datrinti has imaged what Carr could have looked like as John Stewart's Green Lantern in the Justice League Snyder Cut . The piece shows Stewart brandishing his Green Lantern ring and wearing the corps' signature skin-tight body suit, with a look of determination for the battles ahead. Check out the image below.

No matter what DC does with the character going forward, though, some speculation will likely always remain regarding Snyder's cancelled plans. The success of Zack Snyder's Justice League only reignited interest in the sequels he never got to make, but there's no sign that Warner Bros. has any intention of restoring the Snyderverse anytime soon. Hopefully, the future of the DCEU will lead in some interesting new directions, possibly featuring Green Lantern in more than just a cameo role.

Simcha Fisher: Has the pandemic improved you too much? A quiz

Here we are, just about on the other side of the pandemic. Yes we are. Quiet, I said we are and I can’t hear anything else right now or I’m going to go completely out of my mind.

(a) I got dressed every day, especially if there was a Zoom meeting, but a certain amount of elastic has certainly made its way into my permanent collection, it certainly has.

(c) I have so much respect for myself that I never stopped putting on full business attire every day, including makeup, hair extensions, false eyelashes, skin tight pleather pants, and a pair of barbarically stacked heels that honest to goodness just look weird within 500 feet of the kindergarten. I’m sorry, I forgot what we were talking about, and I was just thinking of that one mother at school drop-off every morning. Yikes, lady.

(a) I was so stressed out that let myself eat whatever I wanted and lie around for a while, but then I realised it wasn’t really serving me, so now I’m doing some gentle exercises every day to try to get the ol’ wibble-wobble back under the ol’ controlio.

(a) I missed hanging out with people, but we did online stuff and outdoor stuff, and as soon as everyone’s vaccinated, we’re going to have an amazing cookout.

(c) This year really opened my eyes, and I saw a need to actualise in my community a vision that holds space more centered mindfulness, so I’m currently interfacing with a cohort of leaders who can speak their truth that we’re all in this together, because only then can we truly hold space for each others’ uhhh spacefulness. And I can tell how sorely needed this service is, because every time I approach a group of co-workers, someone mutters, “Oh crap, here she comes again.”

(a) I tried to approach it like an extended time in the desert like so many of the saints have endured, but phew, it feels great to be back in the pew.

(a) We had our challenges, but we muscled through, and we feel like we learned a lot along the way and maybe even came out stronger.

If you answered mainly (c) you can just go ahead and pick up my kid from kindergarten, why don’t you. Gosh.

Welsh actor Rhys Ifans torpedoes hopes he'll play Rod Stewart in a biopic

Stewart said last year he would love to see Ifans slip in to skin tight leather trousers to play him, but that prospect now looks unlikely.

When asked about the prospect of playing Rod Stewart in a biopic by Rob Brydon on the Brydon & podcast, he said: "Twenty years ago, maybe.

Rod Stewart has previously said: "Yeah, Rhys would be a very good idea. [But] he has got to do something with his barnet.”

I'm a huge Rod Stewart fan too, I have been since I was twelve years old. This will be an amazing film. I can't wait to see it. I think it would be wonderful if Owen Wilson would play Rod Stewart 🙏.

Sailor Moon: 7 Outfits That Were Inspired By Real Fashion Brands

Sailor Moon is the quintessential magical girl anime, a staple for any fan of the genre. Both the manga and the original 90s anime adaptation influenced an entire generation of magical girls , whether it be in terms of skillset, team dynamics, or fashion. The latter in particular provided fans with the emblematic Sailor Scout uniform, which was based on the classic Japanese schoolgirl uniform, and revolutionized magical girl outfits for years to come.

What many don't know, however, is that Naoko Takeuchi, the writer/illustrator of the manga, took inspiration from high fashion brands when designing some of Sailor Moon 's most iconic outfits. As a dedicated fan of haute couture, Takeuchi was influenced by the work of fashion designers such as Thierry Mugler and Chanel, whose fascinating pieces turned Sailor Moon characters from teenagers and villains into fashion icons fighting for love and justice.

For Queen Beryl's deep purple dress, Naoko Takeuchi took inspiration from several dresses in Thierry Mugler's ready-to-wear and haute couture collections from 1992. The horn-like shape of the neckline, in particular, was probably taken from a silver dress worn by Ivanka Trump at the runway show for the Spring-Summer collection. The sexy yet regal appeal of the skin-tight dress and the revealing neckline works perfectly with a character like Queen Beryl, who not only demands the destruction of the Sailor Scouts but also flaunts her status as the villainous Commander of the Dark Kingdom .

As a member of the Black Moon Clan and one of the Spectre Sisters, Calaveras deserved nothing less than the golden Christian Lacroix outfit she wears. The look appeared in the brand's Fall-Winter collection from 1992 and consists of a golden corset that resembles armor, a short red skirt, and a large, golden bow at the back of the head.

Takeuchi completed Calaveras' uniform with golden accessories and boots, and the signature Black Moon Clan downwards facing half-moon, making Calaveras one of the more stylish Spectre Sisters.

Showing her admiration for the French fashion brand once again, Takeuchi dressed Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Saturn) in a black turtleneck t-shirt from Mugler's 1992 Fall-Winter collection.

The look, which also includes an array of geometric cutouts and a black bow on each shoulder, appeared in a full-color illustration in the manga and has never crossed over to the anime. Despite this, Hotaru does wear a similar, if less detailed, long-sleeved black shirt in the 90s anime as one of her day-to-day outfits.

Similar to Sailor Saturn's fashionista moment, Setsuna Meiou (Sailor Pluto) donned this gems-and-gold-heavy outfit for a manga illustration. The simple, short black dress and strings of gold chains appeared on the runway and in printed ads for Chanel's 1992 Fall-Winter collection. Takeuchi added Setsuna's trademark Garnet stone to the flower broaches on her necklace and body jewelry, alluding to the weapon she uses as the Guardian of the Space-Time Door , the Garnet Rod.

Naoko Takeuchi drew inspiration for Black Lady's outfit from a 1991 Yves Saint Laurent perfume ad featuring Kate Moss. The Sailor Moon author kept the dark colors and the revealing side slit on the skirt of the dress, but changed the bust area for simple straps and a see-through undershirt with long sleeves. Takeuchi later recreated the YSL ad in an illustration where Black Lady takes on the role of the model, displaying the now-iconic outfit that anime fans worldwide have been cosplaying for over twenty years.
