Roblox: 'We paid off our parents' mortgage making video games' - BBC News

When identical twins Ben and Matt Horton began making serious money from creating video games, their parents couldn't believe it.

"It was quite bizarre at first, because I was doing a paper round and they were blown away," says Ben. "They said there was no way a paper round can make this much."

His brother Matt adds: "It was a significant amount of money. They thought we were doing shady stuff online."

As it turned out, the brothers had produced their first big hit - a game called Boat Ride, launched on the online gaming platform Roblox - and they were just 13.

Why game developers can't get a handle on doors - The Verge

A door isn't exactly mankind's best or even smartest invention in the real world. It's a comically simple concept — open big rectangle for entry or exit — that in development becomes a team-wide problem. As Crystal Dynamics game director Will Kerslake put it in a message to The Verge , there are "so many issues with doors." In one example, touching specifically on animation, Kerslake explained that doors can open toward or away from you; handles can be on either side.

Other problems might involve several players all scrabbling for a door at the same time, or even non-player characters. If a door hits an NPC, does the door stop, or does the NPC move? "The choices here can cause all kinds of bugs depending on your game," says Kerslake.

5 Best Video Game Stocks to Play for Years | Kiplinger

The video game market has long abandoned the family basement. Now, it – and video game stocks – get plenty of respect.

That follows a burst of pandemic-fueled growth in video game companies' businesses (and their stocks) last year. According to IDC, 2020's global video game revenues are expected to have grown by 20% to $179.7 billion.

"Video gaming had a tremendous year in 2020," says Ed Lopez, head of ETF product at VanEck, during a recent virtual media roundtable. But he adds that there is a "longer-term, persistent trend happening within the video gaming and esports space."

Sorry parents, looks like your kid can make a career playing video games

The first is a degree in simulation and game programming; the second, a technician degree in unmanned aircraft systems.

"We didn't really have the ability to offer these degrees until this building opened," said Max Hibbs, dean of engineering, computer technology, and innovation at Blinn. "It has high tech engineering and technology labs, high tech computer science and programming space - we call it the 'dry lab' - that's classroom and lab space together."

The Best (& Worst) Video Game Houses & Homes | Screen Rant

Video games are an amazing medium to portray worlds beyond our wildest imagination. From sci-fi planets to fantasy kingdoms , there is nothing that cannot be done. Sometimes though, it is not the fantastical that draws the attention. Sometimes it is the simple allure of a place called home.

From Lara Croft and her iconic Croft Manor (which has grown and expanded over the years along with its heroine) to the upcycled barrels of Cranky Kong, video game characters clearly want the chance to lay their heads down at the end of a long day just as much as anyone. Perhaps even more so; after all, more often than not gaming heroes go for more than a few days slaying enemies and saving the world without so much as a strong cup of coffee to keep them awake and energized.

How Video Game Technology Helps DOD and Schools During Pandemic - Nextgov

For schools, having a vast majority of children learning remotely makes it difficult for teachers to hold their students' attention. Meanwhile, in the Army, the problem is more one of finding a way to allow soldiers to train and maintain their readiness while keeping socially distant from one another as much as possible. In both cases, video games have proved to be a good solution.

I have already written about how the National Institute of Mental Health-funded programs using video game technology to help schools improve the attention spans of students struggling with remote learning. But one company, G2A.com, thought that video games themselves could be employed to enhance the remote learning experience.
