In some ways, making a movie isn't too different from running a business: At the end of the day, it's just a set of relationships. Financial interests clash with creative ones. The mission depends on who's in charge. And when new management comes in, sometimes people further down the chain find themselves suddenly out of a job, too.

Exclusive Premiere: Alana Springsteen's 'Trying Not To' Music Video | PEOPLE.com

"We both knew right away that we had something special, and this song needed to be out in the world. I'm such a fan of Roman's music," Springsteen tells PEOPLE. "The texture his voice adds to this song as well as his delivery is so important to it. You feel it as soon as he sings in the first verse. I just don't hear this song any other way."

The Nashville transplant from Virginia Beach also shares how the songwriting process for "Trying Not To" came to be.

Met Opera's Music Director Decries Musicians' Unpaid Furlough - The New York Times

Urging the Metropolitan Opera to compensate its artists "appropriately," the company's music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, sent a letter to leaders at the Met on Thursday saying that the many months its orchestra and chorus had gone without pay during the pandemic had become "increasingly unacceptable."

He sent the letter as the Met's musicians were scheduled to receive their first partial paychecks since they were furloughed in April. Before this week, they had been the last major ensemble in the country without a deal for at least some pay during the pandemic.

Missing Music Streaming Royalties for Songwriters : The Indicator from Planet Money : NPR

But as it turns it, many of those songwriters have actually not yet been paid for all those sweet tunes we've been streaming non-stop. Last month, news broke that 20 of the largest music streaming platforms had been sitting on no less than $424 million in so-called "unmatched royalties". That's money that they had collected but didn't know whom to pay.

'Music is a way of reclaiming time': Behrouz Boochani's lauded memoir becomes a poetic musical

The cycle's seventh song, about the little blond girl, begins with uplifting, lyrical singing accompanied by an attractive melody. But then the song lines become "infused with a very dark, dissonant harmony", and percussive music takes hold, reflecting Boochani's widely shared anger over the Australian government placing children in detention. "Where in the world do they take children captive and throw them inside a cage?" writes Boochani.

The song cycle follows the memoir's trajectory: the first half is a sea odyssey, followed by a section dominated by a "weaving, dark line" of bass clarinet, tuba and low strings to accompany Boochani's observations of the island prison. The work finishes by drawing on some of Boochani's final philosophical lines and lamentations.
