COVID-19 pandemic spawns renewed interest in classic video games

Classic video games appear to be making a comeback due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people continuing to be stuck indoors.

"Video games are a great way to fill the time, and especially with the retro stuff, it's kind of nostalgic," said Travis Boune, owner of 1UP Retro Gaming in midtown Sacramento.

Boune opened his store on Black Friday last year, in the middle of the economic downturn. He says business has continued to do well.

Did Video Games Teach People To Manipulate the Stock Market?

How did a large, loose network of strangers upend the stock market recently? Here’s an interesting theory: They did it thanks to video games.

“Both Reddit and Discord have their roots in video games, where rapid discovery of information and coordination between multiple parties is essential to win,” writes disruption researcher Hamza Mudassir,  in a piece  I was very happy to publish this week on Entrepreneur.

We  love  asking that question about new things. But we shouldn’t. It’s the wrong question to ask—because change doesn’t work like that. And if we want to be change-makers, we need to appreciate what change really means.

Best video game title screens - The Washington Post

Video game title screens are an artform. Their layout, design, imagery and sounds are the first impression players get of a gaming experience, and certain developers have taken title screen concepts to incredible, immersive levels. Launcher took a look at some of gaming's greatest title screens to see what makes them work so well. We considered multiple factors — cinematography, aesthetics, sound design, nostalgia, gaming legacy and how the title screen sets player expectations.

* * *

The best title screens are the ones that can convey what the game's experience will be like, and Nintendo is particularly good at show-don't-tell game design when it comes to their Mario games. In "Super Mario Bros. 3," you actually see gameplay features before even pushing a button. The new tanooki suit power up, kicking Koopa shells and walking behind certain background set pieces is a tantalizing snippet of what new experiences you can expect from this game.

Oakland Program Strives to Bring Black Community Into Video Game Industry – NBC Bay Area

They're among the leading consumers of video games, but Black people make up only a tiny fraction of people working in the gaming industry.

According to the Game Developers Association, Black people make up roughly 2% of the video game industry. Gameheads wants to see that number go up.

"The strength of young folks in the East Bay — if you're from the Bay Area — you know it's the arts," Packwood said.

Gameheads teaches design, animation, motion capture and everything else one needs for a job in the gaming field.

Scott Brooks wants Wizards players to play less video games, watch more film

Wizards head coach Scott Brooks can relate. He said on Friday he wants his young players to watch more film and play fewer video games. Apparently, that is a common problem in his experience coaching players of the current era.

" I think all of our players need to improve on it. We send clips out [and] they need to watch it. We know who watches it and doesn’t watch it. All of our guys need to improve. It’s a physical game and a mental game. You just can’t work on the physical part and neglect the mental part of it," Brooks said.
