Video games might be good for your mental health after all — study

Suburban moms and frustrated teachers have been toting the negative effects of video games since their inception, but new research now suggests that these accusations may just be the result of bad science .

Pigs Can Learn to Play Video Games When Tempted by Treats | Smart News | Smithsonian

There are three bright blue walls displayed on a black screen. Move the cursor to a wall, the computer goes bloop! and a treat pops out. After some success, one wall disappears. With only two walls, it’s a little bit harder. Then, after more bloops and treats, the screen drops down to one blue wall.

For a pig moving the joystick with its snout, it takes serious skills to get the cursor to that one blue wall.

But four pigs, named Omelet, Hamlet, Ivory and Ebony could do just that. A paper published on February 11 in the journal Frontiers in Psychology documents how the four pigs at Purdue University’s Center for Animal Welfare Science learned to play the simple video game. In many cases, the pigs performed significantly better than if they were moving the joystick at random.

Study: Pandemic led to more Americans playing video games

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The coronavirus pandemic has kept many of us in our homes looking for different downtime activities, and some experts say more Americans than ever are using that time to play video games.

Trend expert Jenna Shailynn says it's no surprise there was a rise in gameplay in 2020 as it is a good way to meet and connect with new people.

“We saw that 76% of Americans are actually playing video games, and 26% of Americans said they were more interested in esports content than they were in traditional sporting events,” she said.

Sixty-seven percent of respondents said they've been able to reconnect with their younger self by playing video games during quarantine

Three-quarters of Americans need to escape the real world due to the stress of COVID-19, according to new research.

The study asked 2,000 Americans how they've been coping with quarantine and found 65% struggled to find a quarantine hobby they could stick with at first.

But they've tried to fill their time in other ways. Some of the top activities respondents have done to stay busy during this time included playing video games, binge-watching, reading and completing crossword puzzles.
