Quite a lot has been going on:

“We’re one of those rare industries that has a lot of different industries in one. We’re both artistic and scientific, and coding and engineering,” says Stanley Pierre-Louis, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association.
“We are an industry that not only creates jobs and economic output but we have a spillover effect on others. Today we create 143,000 jobs but that spillover effect helps create three times as much 428,000 jobs.”
Nemesis System: WB's Patent Will Only Make Video Games Worse
Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System was a revolutionary design idea that gave the game a unique identity and was widely praised by fans and critics alike. The story of the ranger Talion isn't revolutionary in any regard, but the Nemesis System helped every player have a unique experience
It's baffling that in the years since Shadow of Mordor no other games have tried to incorporate the Nemesis System, and unfortunately, now they never will. After a long legal battle, WB Games has secured a patent for the Nemesis System, meaning they now have exclusive use of it.
Landmark study finds link between playing video games and well-being
A first-of-its-kind study from Oxford University has investigated the relationship between well-being and time spent playing video games using novel industry data from two popular video games. The surprising findings revealed a small correlation between longer play-times and positive well-being.
The research began in 2019 with the Oxford team discussing collaborative opportunities with several major gaming companies. One of the general goals was to conduct a correlational study using objective play-time data as opposed to the traditional self-reported data used in prior research.

Advertisements in video games isn't a new subject, but it's one that continuously divides gamers.
The earliest advertisement in video games that I recall is the Pepsiman video game. Pepsiman, released in 1999 for the PlayStation, was about the titular superhero mascot created by PepsiCo Japan and had videos before each stage showing a man drinking Pepsi. The whole game was an advertisement and it got away with it — even becoming a meme, according to CBR .
How video games really can make you a better fighter pilot - We Are The Mighty
Does playing video games and desktop simulators, such as Microsoft Flight Sim, prepare you to become a fighter pilot?
As a fighter pilot, much of our training takes place in a simulator, which is the ultimate video game. Stepping into these rooms, you're dwarfed by a giant sphere that projects a 360-degree view of your surroundings. After climbing into an exact replica of the cockpit, a motor then pushes you into the middle of the sphere and it's fights on—You're anywhere in the world with any weapons you want and adversaries that can be dialed-up in difficulty as needed.
