Volleyball teams excelled despite pandemic

Volleyball teams across Garland County showed maturity this season as the players maintained a positive outlook while following COVID-19 guidelines, making sure they were able to get the most out of their season.

Lakeside claimed the top spot in the 5A-South with Lake Hamilton coming in as runner-up and Hot Springs securing the No. 3 seed. Jessieville was conference runner-up for the 3A-Central.

"Initially, we had to be 12 feet apart," said Hot Springs head coach Deana Franklin. "You could only use a ball per person. You couldn't have two girls using the same ball, which in volleyball it's very hard to do that much with a ball by yourself. Then they loosened it up to where everybody could touch the same ball and start getting closer together and once that happened, practices were pretty much normal practices. We just sanitized everything. We sanitized in between practices.

February 2020: Year In Review – WBIW

In February 2020, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County celebrated the burning of their mortgage.

The event was held at the Limestone Unit. Jim Sowders jumped from the roof of the building in celebration and the mortgage went up in flames.

According to police, on January 9, 2020 Roxanne Knowles found Bowden dead in his apartment at 403 West Warren Street. Knowles is Bowden's ex-wife.

At first Leatherman told investigators he didn’t know how Bowden could have gotten the heroin he had overdosed on. He then told police he knew the heroin was "hot" and probably contained fentanyl.

Many things are taking place:

Mena holds on, slips past Hot Springs

A lack of depth helped leave Hot Springs with its third loss of the season as Mena held on for a 44-40 win over the Lady Trojans Monday afternoon at Trojan Arena.

Head coach Josh Smith had just seven players available for Monday's matchup, but he did not make any excuses for the team.

"They played hard," he said. "You know, Mena is undefeated for a reason. They're finding ways to win some some close ballgames. ... They're good. They've got good pieces, man. They're big; they've got guards; they've got just good combination of of it all.

Replaying 2020: A look back at the year in Pelham sports - Shelby County Reporter | Shelby County

2020 was the ultimate year of ups and downs in local sports, not just with the triumphant wins and heartbreaking losses, but also with the uncertainty of whether sports could even be played amidst a pandemic. And there were plenty of inspirational stories along the way.
