In the world of art, preservation is an invaluable part of the enjoyment process. Today, we enjoy paintings created centuries ago thanks to efforts from the world’s foremost preservationists, and the National Film Preservation Foundation ensures that the methods of early filmmaking are never lost. There are similar initiatives across other forms of media, too, including the Music Library Association, and the Cartoon Art Museum.

Analogue Duo: a sleek retro console for TurboGrafx and PC Engine games - The Verge

After releasing beautiful aftermarket versions of the NES , SNES , and Sega Genesis , Analogue has now set its sights on NEC's library of old-school hardware. Today the company unveiled the Analogue Duo , a console that supports a huge range of hardware including the TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine, SuperGrafx, TurboGrafx CD, PC Engine CD-ROM, and Super Arcade CD-ROM. It's slated to launch in 2021 for $199.99.

"Sadly, they never got anywhere near the love they deserve," Analogue's Christopher Taber says of NEC's consoles. "I'd say they are probably the greatest under-appreciated video game systems. Analogue Duo is designed to be the ultimate way to explore nearly all of NEC's history, and for most people it's gonna be their first introduction to this piece of video game history."

A new way to think about your favorite game's code - The Verge

It's surprisingly hard to archive a video game. Cartridges decay, eventually; discs become unreadable as their plastic degrades. Source codes are lost to corporate mergers and acquisitions. But what's most dangerous to preserving game history isn't a physical or corporate consideration: it's the prevailing attitude that games are playful, evanescent, and therefore not worth archiving.

Obviously that's not true, and games deserve critical historical consideration, the kind that other, older mediums get. Frank Cifaldi and Kelsey Lewin, co-directors of the Video Game History Foundation, are two of the people leading that charge. I spoke with them a little while ago about preserving video game history, and their new program, the Video Game Source Project , which takes as its footing the idea that there's no better way to study a video game than to access its raw material.

Boundary-breaking in video games like Portal and Bioshock is unholy and wrong

Everyone remembers the moment in Portal when they first noticed that the strings were showing, so to speak, and that the sleek sci-fi test chambers you were being ushered through by the seemingly benevolent voice of GLaDOS were nothing but smoke and mirrors. At some point, everyone notices the cracks in the walls, the scrawled graffiti telling you that "the cake is a lie," and the discarded trash of someone who went through all of this before you.

It's also a trick that has been deployed in many other games, from The Stanley Parable to Bioshock , and while it can be cool and unsettling when done right, you're still only ever seeing the reality that the game developers intended for you to witness. If you ask me, this sort of thing becomes truly terrifying when you find cracks the developers never intended and manage to peek into dark, abandoned worlds that nobody was supposed to see.

A reader who has only recently got into video games wrestles with some of gaming's stranger traditions, from console wars to exclusivity.

I've only started to get into gaming seriously these last few years. Before that my Xbox 360 was a glorified Call Of Duty and FIFA machine, until a bout of pneumonia forced me to broaden my horizons . Prior to that my I was mainly interested in films and music. Therefore, some things with gaming still baffle me. I thought I'd take a slightly tongue in cheek look at them.

Utica Police Will Play Video Games Against Local Youths

COVID-19 has added challenges, and created more than a social distance between Utica law enforcement and the community it serves, but there's a cool new intiative that could change all that.

Friendly competition is the common meeting ground. And, since the pandemic put the kibosh on physical activities like basketball, the PCAL has another plan:

Participants will be randomly assigned to teams with Utica Police Officers and compete to win prizes. The grand prize is an Xbox One Kindle Bundle, which was donated by the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.
