Do 'Sexy Girl' Media Messages Overpower 'Girl Power' Ones?

The film has landed squarely in the middle of a culture war within the U.S. Some claim the film qualifies as child exploitation—amplified by supporters of a QAnon-related conspiracy theory  claiming top Democrats and celebrities are part of a worldwide child trafficking ring. Others  defend the film  as a nuanced coming-of-age story about the challenges of being a young girl—especially a young Black girl.

Maimouna Doucouré, the film’s director, has explained her intentions behind the film:

Why Sexy Dolls For Little Girls Need to Stop, Now

For far too long we have overlooked the gravity of influence the toy industry has on our children. Toy companies that promote highly sexualized toys are financially benefitting from the stereotyping and sexualization of little girls; according to NPD Group, the LOL Surprise! brand generated more than $1.67 billion in sales in 2018.

In response to the criticism, an MGA spokesperson said, "L.O.L Surprise! is a fashion-forward doll brand designed to be fun and expressive. We work very hard to be a brand that listens and adapts to our fans' requests."

'Emily in Paris' Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: 'Sexy or Sexist?'

I really wish I didn't have to keep disappointing you with my reports of Emily's social-media efforts, but she posts a photo of cool French girls smoking cigarettes outside a boutique fitness studio with the hashtag #smokin'bodies, which, in addition to being SO eyeroll-obvious, is not a functioning hashtag because of the apostrophe. Also, it's kind of obnoxious when a show makes a whole thing out of how much a protagonist loves to eat when said heroine is quite thin.

Emily's adorable shower stops working, which brings us to one of my favorite people in her universe, even though she's a walking stereotype: the crotchety building manager who speaks only French. I love her for saying my inner monologue aloud. "Why does she break everything? Can you tell me why she breaks everything?" she asks Gabriel, whom Emily has enlisted as translator. "She's getting on my nerves. Nothing but problems since she got here." Show me the lie!

Woman who slapped girl over anthem in hot water

The vendor, identified only as Poo, became angry after the girl failed to stand up for the 6pm national anthem on Tuesday.

When it was finished she walked over to the girl and criticised her for not standing up. She then slapped her in the face and pulled her hair, in full view of the many people waiting for a train. People quickly intervened.

The girl's family filed a complaint against the woman at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya police station and Ms Poo yesterday apologised to the girl's family and admitted she acted impulsively.
