Conservatives Recast in Classic Video Games | The New Yorker

Thanks for reading, but don't correct my grammar, lest I strike ye down in a whirling rage with briny bilge and orca innards!

Like me, you have the means to fly business class on Air Escape. So why stay in the wildfire-smoking-section, COVID-19-class seats of United States Airlines 2020?

From dread to joy to homesickness, the New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck shows how to capture emotions in cartoons.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played "Among Us" on Twitch to get out the vote - The Washington Post

Ocasio-Cortez played and streamed the popular game "Among Us," drawing a peak viewership of about 438,000 — one of the highest peaks for an individual streamer this year. The figure does not include other accounts that were streaming the event, including fellow Democrat Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and top streamers Imane "Pokimane" Anys, Hasan "Hasanabi" Piker and Ali "Myth" Kabbani.

AOC also put her fellow streamers at ease with multiple references to her own nervousness and saying that, "'You guys can call me AOC, but Mike Pence can't call me AOC."

Video Games Thrive During Pandemic Year Of New Console Launches, But Is An M&A Battle Royale

The video game sector is seeing double-digit growth during COVID-19 and is poised for another shot in the arm by year’s end when Microsoft and Sony launch new consoles, according to industry reports by two Wall Street media analysts.

The strong performance of gaming at a moment when so many other segments of media are reeling, combined with major tech firms booming in 2020, could be setting the stage for major consolidation, they note.

Tim Nollen of Macquarie Capital wrote that gaming is “rapidly evolving into a consumer metaverse: interactive games, media and advertising integrations, and VR/AR render gaming a vast ecosystem of consumer experiences.” He pegged the total global value of video games at between $150 billion and $200 billion, which is five times the level of movie box office, eight times that of recorded music and roughly equal to all TV advertising around the world.

Local author combines sports and video games in latest book

Patrick Hickey Jr. has had plenty of success in the gaming world. In 2018, he released his first book, "The Minds Behind the Games: Interviews With Cult and Classic Video Game Developers (Studies in Gaming)." The book was about classic games and their creators. It struck a chord with gamers and allowed Hickey to attend several conventions. He then decided to make a series out of studies in gaming. Earlier this year, he wrote a book about adventure games.

Now, Hickey Jr., an assistant director of the journalism program and faculty advisor to the Society for Collegiate Journalists at Kingsborough Community College, has taken his passion for games and combined it with sports in "The Minds Behind Sports Games: Interviews with Cult and Classic Video Game Developers (Studies in Gaming)."

* * *

This game hasn't lost much momentum since 2011, because of its creative way of helping kids developing problem solving, reading, and math skills.

The world building game lets players build a huge open world, craft tools, get resources, and defend their structures. Thanks to the multiplayer function, Minecraft also teaches about good teamwork and communication so much so, that many teachers are using it in classrooms.

Do we need a COVID-19 video game? How about 51 games? - Los Angeles Times

I 100% did not know I needed a COVID-19 game — let alone 51 of them — but I absolutely did. Of course, it helps that these games generally don't present dark, complex simulations. Also, they were made in collaboration with an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, meaning a number of them contain actual research.

To ensure that these short experiments in game-making were fact-based, the game makers not only had access to epidemiological models developed by Georgia Tech, but also could consult with a team of medical and health experts organized with input from the National Academy of Sciences' cultural-education-focused LabX department.

'Among Us': AOC plays it. Here's what to know about popular video game

The video game "Among Us" captured the spotlight Tuesday night after House Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar joined Twitch to play along with top streamers as part of a broader effort to encourage Americans to vote in the upcoming election.

The stream drew more than 435,000 viewers, making it one of the most popular streams ever on Twitch.

Although the game launched more than two years, it only recently surged in popularity this year after several YouTubers and streamers started to profile the game through their channels.

Genshin Impact: the video game that's slowly taking over the world | Games | The Guardian

G enshin Impact seems to have come from nowhere. A month ago nobody knew what it was; now ads for it are plastered all over the New York subway and it's the talk of gaming Twitter. It has raked in more than $100m (£75m) in its first two weeks, placing it among the Chinese games industry's most successful forays into the global scene. That's because it's a pretty good game that looks, sounds and feels expensive, but is available for free – at least at face value.

Where Genshin shines brightest is in combat; it's almost as complex as a combo-heavy fighting game. Every character has elemental moves (fire, water etc) that combine to create fun special effects: for instance, hitting an enemy with water followed by ice will freeze them instantly.
