Jim and Starr Mitchell express gratitude for cooler weather. They say their animals are grateful, too.
The Mitchells spent a day with Starr's brother Patrick for his birthday last week. They hopped in their car and had a nice drive out to Pocatello Valley. When they arrived home at Promontory, Starr surprised him with his favorite pizza. She was happy to have cooler weather to turn on the stove to cook it. She also had a scratch chocolate cake with buttercream icing ready for him. They served the cake with ice cream. Pat said "It was the best cake ever!"

A pair of Red Cloud runners led the way at the Lead-Deadwood Invitational cross country meet Tuesday at the Tomahawk Country Club.
Jade Ecoffy and Ashlan Carlow went one-two in the girls' 5k, with Ecoffy easily earning the win in a time of 21 minutes, 34.22 seconds, while Carlow came in second at 22:03.75.
A pit of Belle Fourche runners came in third and fourth respectively, as Ava Allen finished in 22:28.72 and Allison Hayes was in 22:32.50.
Hot, dry conditions stoke devastating California wildfires
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Flames devoured swaths of brush and trees in Northern California on Wednesday amid unseasonably hot and dry weather.
High winds that spread new fires this week in the Napa and Sonoma wine country and in a far northern area of the state were reduced to breezes, but vegetation remained ripe for burning in high temperatures amid very low humidity.
The National Weather Service said the weather conditions would last for several days due to high pressure centered over the state. Heat advisories were in effect or pending along about three-quarters of the California coast and many areas had poor air quality due to smoke.
