Netflix’s High Score proves we need a better history of video games - The Verge

Netflix's High Score sets out to amend this. It's a (very) brief history of the video games that spans the '80s and early '90s, when games leapt from arcade cabinets to home consoles, ending just as 3D games arrive on the scene. Creator France Costrel goes out of her way to center frequently overlooked figures in the industry, to a degree that is legitimately surprising. Yet it still fails to offer a clear-eyed view of the industry.

That's not to say it has no redeeming qualities. Among High Score's best moments: an episode that prominently features Rebecca Heineman, a long time game developer who is also the first winner of a national video game tournament and a trans woman. In another, the children of Jerry Lawson, the man largely responsible for the creation of the video game cartridge, reminisce about their late father, one of the few Black engineers in the nascent field of video games.

Body Games Crafts a Love Letter to Carrboro in the Form of a Retro Video Game - INDY Week

In the annals of music , there have been albums released as hour-long films , iPhone apps , USB drives , and edible gummy skulls . But until this week, as far as we know, that list hasn't included an album released as a retro video game.

Along with these local landmarks, the gameplay is stuffed with in-jokes and homages to the Triangle music scene: a radio tuned to 88.1 FM , a remix of al Riggs as the town's soundtrack, and an abandoned screenplay at All Day Records . (Even the INDY makes a cameo.)

'Make stars feel like stars' - Why Madden NFL video game designers created 'X-Factors'

Marcus Spears disagrees with the Madden NFL 21 QB rankings and gives his own version of how the rankings should have looked. (0:47)

Mike Scantlebury watched Super Bowl LV in February, and one play sequence continually stuck out. For most, it would go unnoticed. You likely don't even remember it. The Madden NFL video game designer, though, couldn't let it go. It confirmed much of what he already thought.

In Scantlebury's eyes, those two plays shifted the momentum of the game and showed Jones' impact, which is what the designers of Madden strive for each year. It's a big reason Jones was given a "Momentum Shift" X-Factor attribute in Madden NFL 21, which launches to the public Friday.

Why Does Teabagging in Video Games Remain So Popular? | CBR

Gamers who play in online co-op have an arsenal of ways to tilt opponents, ranging from in-game taunts to "colorful" language over chat. However, there remains an unchanging insult that has transcended genre and platform: teabagging.

Teabagging is performed by crouching over a fallen foe, which serves as both a celebratory gesture by the victor and an act of humiliation for the defeated. It will most likely continue for as long as players have access to a "crouch" input. Despite its widespread use and notoriety, however, some players are on the fence as to whether teabagging adds anything of value to video games .
