Why I usually don't buy brand new video games — and the ones I did

IN THIS ARTICLE Video games mature over time | Video games prices drop significantly | When buying at launch makes sense for you

2020 is actually shaping up to be a good year for games already. But I still have a backlog of older titles to get through, some of which may not have gotten their due at launch. Maybe a game didn't match the developer's overzealous marketing. Others might be shackled by lingering bugs and performance issues and a few are even sullied by relying too heavily on microtransactions that milk you for extra money to make the game more playable and more enjoyable.

This may worth something:

A Government in Japan Limited Video Game Time. This Boy Is Fighting Back. - The New York Times

TOKYO — Until recently, the only opportunity that Wataru, a 17-year-old high school student in Japan, had to play a hero was when he immersed himself in online role-playing games.

But after the government of Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku moved to limit the amount of time young people could spend playing video games or using the internet, he donned the mantle of crusader for the rights of families to decide for themselves how much gaming is too much.

PS5: These are the video games coming to PlayStation 5 console

Of course, a console is nothing without a strong library of games, especially at launch. Here's a roundup of some of the video games coming to the PS5. Some titles will land this holiday, while others are in the works for next year and beyond.

The Peter Parker Spider-Man game from studio Insomniac Games was one of 2018's best PS4 titles. Now, it's back with Miles Morales in the black-and-red suit.

Not sure if every video game console launch requires a racing game, but it sure feels that way. And it's been a long time since PlayStation fans had a proper GT title.

When Vintage Video Games Become Time Capsules : NPR

The video games of yesteryear are my happy place. They're also my most reliable window to the past.

Nostalgia may quite literally mean pain, but purposefully coming face-to-face with my past is how I deal with the stressors of the modern world.

I rediscovered this startling application for my favorite hobby most recently when, rifling through my collection of Nintendo DS cartridges, I happened upon my old copy of Animal Crossing: Wild World , released in 2005, two years before I graduated from high school. Back then, school took up most of my time with research and projects, because I wanted straight A's. But I would always make time for villager customization and creating town tunes.

Not to change the topic here:

Video gamers have pandemic entertainment figured out | The Japan Times

The World Health Organization decided to add video games to its list of officially recognized addictions last year, but now — with concerns over COVID-19 keeping many stuck indoors, and video games being a primarily indoors activity — it seems that now more than ever, video games are the safest way to pass the time.

There has been a lot of attention given to the negative effects of video games, but many studies have found positive aspects to playing such as an increased performance in math and science, increased self-esteem and ability to problem solve. Mark MacDonald is the senior vice president of business development and production at the game development company Enhance Experience and hosts the gaming podcast, "8-4 Play.

'The Last of Us Part 2' review: One of the best video games ever made - The Washington Post

As I moved from one extraordinarily rendered environment to the next — simply coming across a light source in a room can be diverting — the staggering amount of detail on display everywhere made me mull over the human cost that goes into making something on the scale of "The Last of Us Part II." In an industry notorious for asking employees to keep long hours, the perfectionist culture at Naughty Dog still stands out.

"The Last of Us Part II" is one of the best video games I've ever played; I hope the cost to the developers was worth it.

How Video Games Made My Relationship Stronger

Bathing in the glow of a flatscreen TV and mashing buttons may not scream romance to you, but throw in a scented candle, a bottle of wine, and some vinyl records and I am screaming “this is romance!!!” at you. But our obsessive fondness for video games is about more than just date-nights and collecting gold coins—exploring virtual worlds together, both cooperatively and competitively, has actually strengthened our relationship.

* * *

But really, it’s a reminder that a win for one of us is a win for both of us. Working like this helps us let the other person know that we support each other’s goals and are willing to make sacrifices when necessary to achieve them together. It’s about establishing a foundation of trust and a willingness to compromise.
