The Therapeutic Value of Horror Video Games | JSTOR Daily

What’s the appeal? In the journal Preternature , authors Robert M. Geraci, Nat Recine, and Samantha Fox make a compelling case that video games like these have a meaningful psychological role , especially today. “Faced with physical and psychological dangers, human beings imagine them as monsters and seek to master them,” they explain.

The authors take the post-apocalyptic survival game DayZ as an example. In DayZ , you’re dropped with minimal equipment into the middle of an unfriendly landscape full of zombies. Your character is fragile, and if they die, it’s permanent—you’ll have to create a new one for the next try. DayZ , in fact, has no real endgame apart from keeping your character going as long as possible in the face of overwhelming odds.

ESPN NFL 2K5 is still the best NFL video game ever made - The Phinsider

As you probably already know, this week is SB Nation's video game week. Here at The Phinsider we are going to write a few articles inspired by some of our favorite video games of all-time. More specifically, football video games.

Yes, there's Madden, NFL Blitz, and my personal favorite, NFL Street, but nothing compares to the greatest NFL game ever. Not even the classic Tecmo Super Bowl or the unique Mutant League Football can hold a candle to ESPN's NFL 2K5 .

Radio Diary: Work Meetings, Meet Video Games | On Point

With more and more people working from home due to the pandemic, Zoom meetings have become ubiquitous. And for Nate Crowley, reviews editor at Rock, Paper, Shotgun, an independent site that reports on the video game industry, they've also become kind of a drag.

So, at the suggestion of a friend, Crowley recently tried something different for his team. He asked them to meet up in the server of the video game "Red Dead Redemption 2."

"I love it when technology gets used for something weird and benign and not it's intended purpose," Crowley says. "I think that's quite beautiful."

Happy Valley arcade bar to bring video games, themed drinks to Beacon

Johnny Coughlin and Alyssa Follansbee remember the excitement and nostalgia when Emporium Arcade Bar opened in Chicago

"It was just so awesome, we thought, 'How cool would it be to open our own arcade bar?'" Coughlin said.

After moving to Beacon about two years ago, the couple saw the opportunity to make that dream a reality. And soon, Happy Valley arcade bar will be among the latest additions to the city's thriving Main Street.

Amid fan confusion, PlayStation insists Spider-Man PS5’s reveal was not 'misleading' |

The confusion in PlayStation's messaging is possibly influenced by its licensing obligations to Marvel, which is required to approve all assets for the Spider-Man games, thus increasing its reaction time when unexpected PR issues emerge.

PHT remembers hockey video games: How not to settle Gretzky vs. Lemieux

Every week, PHT will spotlight hockey video games you might not have heard of, ones you fondly recall, and ones we'd all like to forget. This time, we ponder the worst way to settle the Mario Lemieux vs. Wayne Gretzky debate: by playing their shaky video games around 1991 (or 1992).

For years — and probably in some cases, to this day — hockey fans debated Gretzky vs. Lemieux. Both sides certainly had ammo, too.

Gretzky doesn't just lead the NHL in all-time goals (894) and points (2,857). It's possible no one will ever generate as many points as Gretzky had assists (1,963 assists; Jaromir Jagr currently sits second all-time in points with 1,921). With four Stanley Cup trophies to go with all of those numbers, it's pretty tough to make an argument against number 99 being the GOAT.
