The video game industry was worth US$139 billion in 2018, with a projected annual growth rate of 12 percent through 2025.
As we have entered a new decade and major console producers are scheduling next-generation product upgrades, a new era of video gaming awaits. Although the full extent of AI integration in the industry remains to be seen, there is no doubt that machine learning algorithms will play an increasingly important role in interactive entertainment like video games.

Then we had to figure out just how many gigabytes make up an average modern game these days. For this, we relied on Sony's own regularly updated list of top-selling PlayStation software . For each year, we used each platform's top-10 best-selling games for December as a reasonably representative cross-section of the console's software library for that year (for 2020, we used the list of top sellers for April).
Going into the PS4 era, though, things shook out quite differently. From 2013 to 2015, the growth in broadband speed and PS4 game size matched each other almost perfectly (Fig. 3). Then the growth of top-selling PS4 games starts to plateau a bit, thanks in large part to a functional "ceiling" of a 50GB file size for games packaged on a single Blu-ray disc. The few outliers that blow past that mark only have a small impact on the average, which has topped out just under 50GB in recent years.

Thank goodness for video games. While all of the above are important matters—coronavirus hasn't gone anywhere despite the lifting of lockdown orders, and police reform is desperately needed across the country—it's okay to have some distractions from the news.

Bill Gates' computer game now available in the Apple App Store
In 1981, 26-year-old Bill Gates found the time to create one of the world's earliest computer games.
Called Donkey.bas, or just "Donkey," it was essentially an old-school arcade driving game where players steered a digital racecar down a straight highway littered with, well, donkeys. The point of the game, simply, was to avoid crashing into the donkeys. The longer you can go without hitting a pixelated donkey, the more points you rack up.
Gates wrote the game's programming with one of Microsoft's first employees, systems programmer Neil Konzen .

"The launch of a new video games console doesn't just mark the passage of time, it represents a new paradigm, the promise of a new kind of creative expression," said Sony Interactive Entertainment's Simon Rutter last night.
The technology that Rutter is talking about is present in the PlayStation 5's new DualSense controller as well as in the console's innards. It has triggers that resist the pressure of your fingers, letting a stiff brake feel different from smooth acceleration on tarmac in a racing game such as Gran Turismo 7, or drawing a bow feel different to shooting a gun in a first-person shooter.
