The 10 Best Video Games of the Year (So Far)

There's a Bruce Lee quote about being like water — formless, shapeless, something that fills the space it's put in. Nioh 2 is a game where fighting monsters feels like being water. An action game set in a fantasy version of Japan's Sengoku Era that casts players as a demon hunter caught in a struggle between warlords, Nioh 2 throws you in the deep end and challenges you to dazzle your way out of it.

Video games as a medium are poorly suited for immediacy — development is too long a process, and far too labor-intensive, to react to current events. Kentucky Route Zero, however, has always felt of the moment. A surreal, Twin Peaks -esque narrative game about Conway, a delivery man trying to drop off a package via a secret highway, Kentucky Route Zero was released sporadically in parts beginning in 2011 before concluding in January of this year.

Advertisers Get Creative With Video Game Integrations

While marketing budgets are usually the first casualty of economic downturns, advertisers are circling video games like Pac-Man ghosts. Facebook noted that video games as a category showed "relative strength" despite a broader decline in ad spend.

That's because digital universes, like the ones in Fortnite and Animal Crossing , offer advertisers the chance to play in a world where physical infrastructure doesn't constrain creativity.

Group Licensing Is the Key to the Return of NCAA Video Games—So What's the Holdup?

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahmad Nassar's daughter was only 9 years old when she asked her father the question every parent dreads.

* * *

O.K., so a sports gaming question isn't necessarily the one terrifying young parents, but maybe it should be. In a world flourishing with electronic gaming competition, an entire generation is unfamiliar with NCAA Football, the Electronic Arts college game that mesmerized gamers until legal disputes over its use of player likeness suspended production in 2014.

Nintendo's earnings exceeded all expectations. The company has a history of doing just that.

Hiroshi Yamauchi was a teenager when the first bombs dropped. The young man would become Nintendo's third-ever president, responsible for its modern incarnation as an entertainment and video game company. But when World War II devastated his home country, as it did so much of the world, any sense of normalcy was put on hold. That didn't stop his grandmother.

By the time Yamauchi took over for his grandfather in 1949, Nintendo, founded some sixty years earlier as a playing cards company, had already weathered two wars and a global depression. When he ceded control to Satoru Iwata in 2002, Japan's economy was just coming out of a historically stagnant 10-year period colloquially called "The Lost Decade.
