'Pretty Woman' At 30: Why The Capitalist Rom-Com Wouldn't Fly Today
"It's all about money," goes the opening line to one of the most iconic films in modern American cinema. "Pretty Woman" is celebrating its 30th anniversary this week, but there's even more reason to watch the classic film again (and again) during self-isolation. It’s the ultimate capitalist rom-com.
Big diamonds, polo matches, fancy sports cars, and lavish hotels, “Pretty Woman” is an ode to all the trappings of wealth liberals enjoy but publicly condemn. Altuzarra, Carolina Herrera, Dries van Noten, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors Collection all sent polka dots down their runways for ss/2020. Each designer had a different take on the classic print; varying the size of the spot and the combination of black and white, but always sticking to the tried and tested monochrome palette.
