An Interview With Halima Aden on Style and Representation | Who What Wear

For those who aren't familiar with how you became a model, can you share a little bit of your story?

* * *

You not only model, but you're also an ambassador for UNICEF. Can you tell us a little about what you do for the organization?

I've had the opportunity to take field visits on behalf of UNICEF to see the work they are doing on the ground in places like Mexico, Kenya, and Italy. I've had the opportunity to speak to my state's lawmakers on Capitol Hill on behalf of UNICEF to urge them to approve the appropriations necessary for UNICEF to continue to deliver a difference for children everywhere. Now, more than ever, with more children on the move, we need to do our part.

Halima Aden on the Burkini That Changed Everything and What Comes Next – Moose Gazette

Born and raised in Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya where her family settled after fleeing from the civil war in Somalia, model Halima Aden recalls her childhood as a happy one. "Beautiful and challenging," she says in her InStyle Badass Women video, above. "When you're stripped of everything, you learn to embrace community."
At age seven, she and her family moved out of the camp to the United States, ultimately settling in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Aden finished among the top 15 but, more importantly, caught the attention of Carine Roitfeld, who cast her in what would be her first editorial shoot for CR Fashion Book. That fashion seal of approval launched her further; Aden became the first model to grace Vogue Arabia and Allure wearing a hijab.
In 2017, Aden hit another milestone, became the first model wearing a hijab to walk a runway show during New York Fashion Week, making her catwalk debut during Autumn/Winter 2017 at Yeezy.

Sports Illustrated, under Ross Levinsohn, plans to dramatically cut staff - Los Angeles Times

Sports Illustrated, which was the gold standard for in-depth sports stories, plunged into turmoil Thursday as the magazine's new management began laying off staff members in a plan to heavily rely on freelancers.

Dozens of staff members are expected to be laid off. The cuts began nearly five months after Iowa publishing giant Meredith Corp. sold the 65-year-old publication to Authentic Brands Group for $110 million. Authentic Brands then assigned licensing rights to a third-party firm, Maven Inc., which now runs the magazine.

Kate Upton Says the Criticism About Her Body After Her 'Sports Illustrated' Swimsuit

She recently opened up about the whirlwind media coverage that followed her first Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover in 2012.

Sports Illustrated February 2020 issue editors' letter: Miami Super Bowl MVPs - Sports Illustrated

The world has changed over the last half century—how’s that for a stunning historical and cultural insight? As obvious as that is, it’s still fun to take stock of the evolution. Especially since we’ve been thinking a lot here lately about what this magazine and brand have been and where they’re going.

Take the Jan. 20, 1969 issue of Sports Illustrated . Joe Namath on the cover, following the Jets’ epic upset of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Tex Maule’s game story, with then-hipster references to the Jet Age and “swinging” nights on the town. The word housewife in the headline of a different story. A car ad touting power windows as a technological leap that will ease the physical burden of rolling up to a mailbox and mailing a letter.
