Here are recommendations for pleasant, immersive video games now that old hands, as well as the dilettantes among us, have more time to play them.

KELLY: So I gather, this list of video games you have brought us, they are known as open world games. Explain what that is.
WELDON: OK, right. It's right there in the name, really. You are dropped in the middle of this vast world, and when you check your map, only the really tiny area that you're in is revealed. So the point of these games is to explore and fill up the map as you go. Now, you are free to follow the story of the game if you want and tick off every little objective, like a good little grade-grubbing grind, if that's who you are.
Quite a lot has been going on:
Play on - The rise and rise of video games | Prospero | The Economist
This reflects the social nature of video games today. Many analysts and industry leaders see them as social networks more than a digital version of a board game or an interactive movie. Players use these games as a way to connect with and spend time with their friends, just as teens once loitered at a shopping centre or spent hours on the phone after school.
These new records have helped highlight the growing but under-appreciated cultural role of video-gaming entertainment. Excluding hardware, consumers now spend $120bn per year on video gaming globally, according to Nielsen: this compares to roughly $30bn on recorded music and $42.5bn at the box office. The market capitalisations of major game publishers such as Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts are several times higher than former Hollywood stalwarts ViacomCBS, MGM or Lionsgate.
6 video games that bring friends together during quarantine | News
With cities shutting down all over the globe, and suggested or mandatory quarantines amongst metropolitan areas, it’s getting harder to hang out with your friends.
The CDC’s suggested protocol for safety during the COVID-19 pandemic means that large gatherings are off the table, but that doesn’t mean that all the fun and games between you and your friends needs to stop completely.
Thanks to the internet, and cooperative or multiplayer gaming, we can still spend time supporting and talking with our loved ones.

Some people look at the weeks ahead and wonder how they will keep themselves from going stir crazy.
But other Americans already have a plan to help combat social isolation: video games. The games offer a solution to some who are looking for a way to hang out with friends and family — while upholding the guidelines on social distancing, including orders to stay at home.

How will children keep learning and stay in touch? Easy: with video games | Games | The Guardian
A s with millions of other parents around the world, when our two sons get home from school this afternoon, we have no idea when they'll be going back. Their schools have been hastily scrabbling together remote learning plans, but things are going to be chaotic and unstructured and that's something we'll all have to learn to deal with. What I know for certain is that my boys will have one thing on their mind: video games.
But you are cutting it. You still have a job, you still have to provide for your family, and if that means more time for the kids on games, that is okay. It's okay.
Wizards and Capitals video game simulations to air on NBCSW - The Washington Post
The NBA and NHL seasons, which were suspended last week because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, will resume — in video game form — in the coming days. Monumental Sports Network and NBC Sports Washington announced Friday that they will broadcast hour-long simulations of the Wizards' and Capitals' previously scheduled regular season games using NBA 2K20 and NHL 20, respectively.
The first of 13 Wizards simulations will air Saturday at 7 p.m., when Washington was scheduled to host Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Eastern Conference-leading Bucks at Capital One Arena. Instead, computer-controlled Bradley Beal will look to lead an upset against computer-controlled Milwaukee. The matchups will be televised on NBC Sports Washington and streamed on its authenticated platforms, as well as on MonumentalSportsNetwork.com and its available apps.
American Truck Simulator: Need an escape? Try this video game. - Vox
This video game is exactly what it sounds like. But it's far more engaging than you might think it would be.
There are few American dreams as alluring to me as that of exploring the open road. Taking to the highways in a slick vehicle, driving well into the night, waiting for the next sleepy little town to stretch out before you — they're all things I love but get to do far less often than I'd like, now that I have a "job" and have to be "responsible" and "pay my bills."
