Video games come for the gym — but can they really work as a fitness regimen? | Salon.com

Enter the video game. For people like me — who already own video game consoles, and who are more apt to spending time indoors — the idea of using a video game to stay fit seems like a win-win. If working out with a video game sounds weird, you may not be familiar with the massive scope of this industry — which continues to grow.

* * *

Video games are now more profitable than the music and film industry combined. As the audience for games grows, it makes sense that the artistic medium has expanded into unusual territory beyond the scope of shooting and fighting games. But in order to give a short history of how fitness and video games merged, you have to wind back to 2006, the golden age of the Nintendo Wii.

See Parents? Video Games are Good for Kids

Could excessive gaming actually be good for teenagers? If this data from the CDC is to be believed then yes, yes they could.

It seems like every generation of video games has some sort of moral panic surrounding it. From Mortal Kombat to Hot Coffee, gaming is never safe from the moral guardians.

Well, it might be time for those guardians to relax a bit. Data seem to suggest that spending more time gaming is stopping teens from drinking, smoking and having sex.

Beauty of video games that confront difficult conversations | Features | yoursun.com

Typically, these activities are interstitial moments, actions that occur before or after something more exciting. Yet these undertakings are at the core of two new games, "Wide Ocean Big Jacket" and "Coffee Talk."

Both approach interactivity with a light touch, letting players uncover intimate, conversational moments. We play less as directors of action and more as voyeurs. Throughout, we connect with sometimes odd characters — we meet an alien, for instance, who is not so hot at the dating app game in "Coffee Talk" — and while we don't become friends with these characters (tech has yet to make such a thing possible), we do walk away feeling as if we've shared a moment with them.
