Esports: More than simply playing video games

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Many of us are familiar with video games as a way to relax. However, the relatively new Blugold eSports Club at UW-Eau Claire is taking a more competitive approach. As many of those members explained, esports are about more than simply playing video games.

When most people think about sports, it's usually football or basketball or baseball. But a new type of sport is gaining popularity worldwide. At UW- Eau Claire, Competitive Sports Coordinator Garrett Larson says esports are on the same level as other sports.

This may worth something:

We Need More Horror-Injected Video Games

Titles that take horror in an unusual direction present new ways to explore the psychological and philosophical themes rooted within the horror genre. Forced into a different perspective, developers must think of new ways to unsettle the player.

Then we have first-person horror titles that leave you without a weapon. The idea was novel with Outlast, Amnesia, and Five Nights at Freddie's, but these games are everywhere now.

Ahman Green is introduced as Lakeland's esports coach. Green, who ranks third on Nebraska's all-time rushing list, is the university's first-ever coach.

Building, Not Following: Creative Video Games as the New Social Media

The scale of multiplayer video games has grown over the years, upping the player count from split-screen in Goldeneye to MMORPG experiences in World of Warcraft and battle royales in Fortnite . Today's gamers, particularly younger ones, are part of huge online networks of friends, collaborators, and friendly competitors. As traditional social media use stagnates among their age group, collaborative and socially-oriented video games are taking the place of more traditional platforms.

The Best Video Games That Got Second Chances Through Updates | Digital Trends

If at first a game doesn't succeed, it can always try again. With content updates and patches now standard across all platforms, the game released on launch day is no longer its final form.

This means studios can eventually turn a flawed game into something worthwhile. It’s already happened several times over the last decade, with BioWare’s coming Anthem overhaul being the latest example. It’s turned good games into great games and, at times, managed to save complete disasters. These are the biggest second-chance successes.
