Within the pantheon of video-game gods is a forty-eight-year-old British designer named Mark Healey. Healey has long gray hair and peppery stubble and wears a grunge-like wardrobe. In 2006, he and four friends founded Media Molecule, a development studio; Healey serves as the creative director.

Dreams, which was released for PlayStation 4 on Friday, is the most powerful example yet of the genre that Healey and Media Molecule have helped pioneer. The game has no central narrative or character, no universal objectives, and no side quests or treasure hunts. Instead, it offers a suite of creative tools that can be used to create art, music, and games themselves. "We want people to go out and make stuff that we could never predict," Healey told me.

Like the somewhat goofy original 2004 game, Bloodlines 2 is a tale of two cities. Play as a former cop, and those who've fallen foul of the law might refuse to help you – or seek payback. Later in the story, you'll also raise the stakes by joining a vampire faction, acquiring potent new abilities such as telepathy while at the same time lowering your standing with the clan's rivals.

Working for a video game company can be rewarding, and equally important, turns a favorite pastime into an exciting career. However, for tween and teen girl gamers, the prospect of one day working in the video game industry might seem daunting. While 46% of the U.S. gamer population is female, women account for only 22% of video game developers.

Two video games that confront difficult conversations - Los Angeles Times

Typically, these activities are interstitial moments, actions that occur before or after something more exciting. Yet these undertakings are at the core of two new games, "Wide Ocean Big Jacket" and "Coffee Talk."

Both approach interactivity with a light touch, letting players uncover intimate, conversational moments. We play less as directors of action and more as voyeurs. Throughout, we connect with sometimes odd characters — we meet an alien, for instance, who is not so hot at the dating app game in "Coffee Talk" — and while we don't become friends with these characters (tech has yet to make such a thing possible), we do walk away feeling as if we've shared a moment with them.

After revamping the way it recruits young people over the past couple years, the Army said it is ahead of schedule to bring in the number of soldiers needed for 2020.

Army Recruiting Command leader Maj. Gen. Frank Muth said the service is more than 2,000 contracts ahead of where it was this time last year.

He attributed that success to the way the Army is adapting to Generation Z — by setting up virtual recruiting stations and pushing advertising heavily in the esports arena. Griftlands is one of my favorite computer games I've played in the past year. Featuring the vibrant animations that gave Klei Entertainment's other games like Don't Starve so much charm, Griftlands turns negotiations into combat — your hero, Sal, uses influence, domination, intimidation and guile to chip away at an opponent's resolve. Most enemies can be defeated without the need to ever draw your blaster.

Still, there's one thing interested buyers should know about it. The game isn't even half finished. When I first picked it up, I managed to get all the way to the night before a climactic confrontation with Sal's nemesis until the game told me, "Sorry, that's all for now."

Imagine a mouth wide and open. It’s your job to feed a plastic line of tubing past the teeth, over the tongue, past the red dangling uvula, down the throat, and into the trachea near the lungs. You are trying to ensure the person to whom this mouth belongs is getting oxygen.

As you send the tubing further into the throat, you see a butterfly-shaped opening to the airway. It flexes as air pulses in and out. At the top of it is a small tumor. You wait for the airway to flare open and then push the tube through. You hit the side of the tracheal wall instead. The mouth coughs repeatedly and you have to pull the tube out.

I see you're enjoying some nice video games on this fine day. Did you know that visually-stunning platformer or your favorite open-world game wouldn't be anywhere near as entertaining as it is without some of the incredible moves made in the 1980s to push the state of the art and change the way we think about video games as a whole? We owe a lot to the classic games of the '80s, and not for the reasons you might think just by looking at images of the games from the past.

The people behind many of these games were blazing trails never explored before. Trying to figure out how to make it feel like you were flying through space, or walking a character through an open field, with precious little resources to do it. These games introduced game mechanics we're still using in many games today, largely because these titles inspired so many to learn how to make their own experiences to share with the world.
