Wizards of the Coast expands ‘Magic’ and ‘D&D’ further beyond

Wizards of the Coast announced two new video games Thursday night, expanding its iconic tabletop gaming franchises further into the digital realm.

The company, based in Renton, Wash., unveiled a new Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game for PCs and consoles called Dark Alliance ; and a new massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game called Magic: Legends , set in the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering.

Wizards of the Coast made the announcements at the annual Game Awards video game show, where ordinarily you might not expect to hear anything from a tabletop game company. But Wizards of the Coast has been expanding into video games, with recent offerings including 'Magic: The Gathering – Arena,' and the latest unveilings continue the trend.

Microsoft unveils Xbox Series X, new video game console meets online mockery | Fox Business

Scott Bachrach, the president of Tastemakers, shares why retro video games aren't making a comeback because they never left.

Microsoft unveiled its next Xbox, the Series X this week. But the biggest thing about the announcement may not be the news, but the physical size of the console.

* * *

The company said the Xbox Series X will be its "fastest, most powerful console ever" once it's released next year. But the unusual, towering design drew jokes on Twitter comparing the console to items like a refrigerator, a bazooka from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie “Commando” and the monolith from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Part of the reason Riot is pushing into TV? Its co-founder wants to destigmatize games.

"It's less about the acknowledgment or recognition from some broader culture," Merrill said to The Washington Post. "The thing that bothers me is the stigma or the negative judgment."

That stigma is part of the motivation for Riot's planned expansion beyond the gaming world. Addressing why Riot decided to make a TV show, entitled "Arcane," Merrill said the company has an ability to continue to broaden the public's understanding of what video games, and the industry built around them, represent.

Amazon will honor free pre-orders for "New World" alpha testers - Business Insider

There's good news, though: Amazon on Friday started to notify some players who pre-ordered the game when it was first announced — which was in 2018 — that they'll get the finished product for free at launch.

The e-mail goes on to tell those players that they'll be eligible to participate in a special pre-launch beta test of "New World" that's reserved for those who pre-ordered the game.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider over how wide-spread this promotion will be.

Intense Gaming Can Trigger Syncope in Some Children and Teens – Health Essentials from

Syncope, or loss of consciousness, is when someone faints because their heart rate and blood pressure suddenly drop – usually because of physical or emotional intensity. Sometimes this can happen to someone at the sight of blood or if they've been standing in the heat for too long. Other times it can happen when playing a sport or if someone gets too excited or upset quickly.

It's the same condition that causes other kids to pass out while playing sports. This cardiac abnormality usually happens when the video game (or during physical exertion) reaches peak intensity.
