It's the end of another busy year in the gaming business, and 2020 is looking especially exciting with Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X on the horizon. Overall, the anticipation of new consoles has driven video game sales down this year by about 12%, but the best-selling games of 2019 still managed to set new records, especially popular franchises like "Call of Duty" and "Pokémon."
According to data from the NPD group, eight of the top 10 best-selling games of 2019 were direct sequels. The other two games are "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," which launched a month before the end of the latest blockbuster "Star Wars" film trilogy, and "Anthem," a new franchise from the creators of the critically-acclaimed "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age" games.

The announcements of new Baldur's Gate and Dark Alliance games suggest a change, and that's backed up by Wizards of the Coast. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz , Wizards of the Coast president Chris Cocks explained that this is only the beginning and there are "seven or eight" videogames based on D&D coming out in the next few years.

"We want each game to have a point of view, and to really keep on just a couple of things and do it really, really well," he said. "What you don't want to do is have every game in the franchise try to do the same thing, and try to do everything all at once."

I was pretty worried before and during the 2019 Game Awards that my favorite game of 2019 would get the cold shoulder.
Kojima is a brilliant game designer, but I'm more of a Hidetaka Miyazaki guy myself. Miyazaki's games are consistently brilliant, and the company he heads up, FromSoftware has created several of my favorite games of all time.

After a delay, Fortnite players get treated to free Star Wars items and a new scene - The
Players, including high-profile streamers, had difficulty logging into the online title by Epic Games. Players across all platforms, including the mobile phone and Nintendo Switch, were met with error messages, and Epic Games announced a delay of the event by 10 minutes after its expected 2 p.m. start time.
Sure enough, 13 minutes later, the Millennium Falcon roared above the Fortnite island, chased by First Order TIE Fighters. After a short dogfight, the Falcon landed and a stormtrooper, FN-143, emerged. The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley emceed the event, and introduced "The Rise of Skywalker" director J.J. Abrams, who appeared in the game as himself, albeit with very tight black pants.
