The Next 7-Steps For RPA Software Robots

CTO for Blue Prism EMEA region Peter Walker: good RPA practice should be enshrined in a no-code ... [+] philosophy.

Automation is the currently darling of the technology industry. Alongside big data analytics, cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI), if you haven't got an automation story to tell, then you haven't earned your stripes and you don't get anything special from Santa this year.

Over and above simply pointing to automation, in this sense we're talking about software automation and, even more specifically we're thinking about software 'robots' i.e. discrete pieces of software code tasked with performing specific defined tasks inside a business.

Orbiting Robots Could Soon Repair Satellites in Space | Discover Magazine

The researchers found that using five robots allowed them to complete the task, even if one of the robots failed. The project will help the students create automated navigation so satellites can dock up without bumping into each other in space, sending the objects tumbling. Once a satellite is launched, it's impossible to repair or refuel it in low-Earth orbit. This leads to a number of useless satellites drifting through LEO.

As humans keep putting satellites into space, the risk of these human-made objects colliding into each other grows with every launch. The preexisting debris and naturally occurring micrometeoroids surrounding Earth are already a concern. But when these objects collide with each other, they create even more debris. The potential runaway debris problem, dubbed the Kessler effect or Kessler syndrome, has become a growing concern as more and more satellites are sent into space.

Nordstrom partners with Attabotics and Tompkins Robotics for faster delivery

NEWARK, California — If you're in retail these days, you're likely trying to solve these two problems: how to cut costs, and how to get products to your customers as quickly as possible.

Nordstrom thinks it has found a solution that will help it do both. And it starts at a warehouse in Newark, California.

The Seattle-headquartered company has tapped two new partners, robotics supply chain company Attabotics and parcel-sorting provider Tompkins Robotics, to test a more modern facility in the San Jose area. If successful, the retailer could expand its use to Nordstrom's eight other U.S. distribution centers.

In case you are keeping track:

Cafe Staffed by Robots Opens in Japan

On Thursday, SoftBank Robotics opened the Pepper PARLOR , a cafe where three different types of robots work alongside human staff to serve and entertain customers.

SoftBank developed all three of the robots working in the Pepper PARLOR, including the cafe's eponym, Pepper . That semi-humanoid robot does most of the interacting with customers, greeting them and taking their orders.

SoftBank's NAO robots , meanwhile, provide the entertainment, performing choreographed dances to entertain patrons. When the cafe closes, the company's autonomous vacuum robot Whiz cleans its floors.

New, Emotionally Intelligent Robot CIMON 2 Heads to Space Station | Space

The astronaut assistant known as CIMON 2 just launched for the orbiting lab aboard SpaceX's robotic Dragon cargo capsule , which lifted off today (Dec. 5) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

CIMON 2 is following in the footsteps of the original CIMON (Crew Interactive Mobile Companion), which reached the ISS in the summer of 2018, also aboard a Dragon. Both robots were developed by the European aerospace company Airbus on behalf of the German space agency, DLR, and employ IBM's Watson system as their AI.

Smart farming: This weed-hunting robot is taking to the fields | ZDNet

Sam Watson Jones (right), co-founder of Small Robot Company (SRC), with Callum Weir, farm manager at the National Trust's Wimpole Estate, and SRC's monitoring robot, Tom.

"Broadleaved weeds you can just do with visual data, but grass weeds require different cameras such as hyperspectral and stereo," SRC co-founder Sam Watson-Jones told ZDNet. "You increase the certainty of the AI by building up different layers of data."

Organic farms such as the National Trust's Wimpole Estate try to minimise the use of herbicides, to the benefit of wildlife and the general environment. Non-chemical weeding is also a priority for SRC because chemical control of blackgrass is problematical, Watson-Jones said. That's why SRC has partnered with RootWave to adapt its 'electricide' technology for use on the precision-weeding 'Dick' robot.
