Space has obsessed video-game designers for reasons both practical (it's easy to render a void) and conceptual (it's easy to explore a void from an armchair). Not all galaxies are created equal, however. Some are vast and listless; others, like the one in Outer Wilds, seem intimate. The game has you explore a tight-knit solar system via a rickety Apollo Lander, which lands on planets with a slick kiss or a dusty thud, depending on your skill as a pilot.

The best, worst, weirdest of 40 years of Star Wars video games
Empire is comprised almost entirely of dramatic beats ready-made for video game adaptation. The Millennium Falcon flying through asteroid fields and into the maw of a gargantuan space worm. Luke's swampy, spiritual CrossFit training with Yoda on Dagobah. Desperate shootouts and saber duels in Cloud City. And the grandaddy of them all, the snow speeder battle against the empire's hulking quadrupedal AT-AT tanks on the ice planet Hoth.
When Rex Bradford made the first Star Wars game ever on Atari 2600, he rendered that Hoth battle in uncomplicated, impressionistic hues that maintained the sense of scale and speed that made it so powerful in the first place. There wasn't much to it, but there was a tacit understanding of the velocity and stakes that made the scene an indelible part of the pop landscape for decades.

Game of the year: the best games of 2019 - The Verge
It's that time of year again: the period when we argue about, and celebrate, our favorite games that came out in the last 12 months. 2019 was a bit of a strange year in that regard, with few big-name blockbusters dominating the conversation. Instead, we settled on a much more diverse set of favorites, ranging from supernatural thrillers to leather-clad action games. And yes, there's a goose. Here's your guide to The Verge staff's favorite video games of 2019.
Mark Emmert comments on potential NCAA video games return
NCAA President Mark Emmert commented on college sports video games making a potential return to the entertainment world.
Emmert said he’s open to bringing basketball and football video games back, but it sounds like there are some pretty big obstacles that would need to be cleared first.
Jane McManus of the New York Daily News highlighted three requirements Emmert would need for the NCAA to move forward with the decision to bring these video games back. These seem to be very steep requirements that would make this a long shot.
PD: Man charged with burglary after stealing 100 video games from Glendale library
Glendale police report that on November 26 three suspects entered the Glendale Foothills Library, near 57th Avenue and Union Hills Drive, and stole two binders with about 100 video game discs inside.

On December 4, a library manager contacted police after reportedly seeing the stolen games on OfferUp. Police say the Offer Up account was listed to Walter Travis Goodman, 28. Court records show that many of the games in the advertisement still displayed a label saying, "Glendale Public Library."
Games that defined the decade: The Last of Us pushed video games to be smarter, bolder, and
I can pinpoint the exact moment I knew The Last of Us was going to be something special. It wasn't, as it is for many, that harrowing prologue, but instead what follows immediately after. Set to Gustavo Santaolalla's haunting, sombre score, the game's opening credits are a mercurian portrait of the day the world ended, shot in real time via Naughty Dog's homegrown concoction of fungi, resins, and slimes.
For many, this sequence might seem like mere window dressing to the game proper, yet non-playable credits sequences – particularly ones as high in production value as this – were practically non-existent at the time. Naughty Dog's deployment of a device usually saved for cinema thus resembled the mark of a game that respected both itself, its medium, and the mediums that paved the way before it, and that meant something.
