Well here we are, just days away from Y2K 3.0. The 10s' are staggering to an awkward finish-line, and the roaring 20s' are upon us. It's hard to imagine the next ten years could possibly be as weird as the last ten, but I suspect they'll be even weirder. Things like climate change, AI and probably flying cars are all in our sights now.
But instead of looking forward, this is one of those rare occasions when we should look back—back upon the last decade and specifically the last decade of video games. I'll have another post about my favorite and most important video games of the decade, but for the purposes of this post, let's take a moment to acknowledge the very best console the last ten years have given us:
Quite a lot has been going on:
2019 was the year things got weird for video games | VentureBeat
The video games industry is odd . This is a business where the leading companies regularly reset their market share every five-to-seven years. But over the last 12 months, we've seen a number of new trends that make video games seem like an even stranger beast — and one that is ready to change again.

If you look to other ways in which the industry is changing, it all fits with this trend. Crossplay is now the standard going forward. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are feeling less precious about their walled gardens. And the reason, again, is that services are more important. And service games like Fortnite and Minecraft work better if platforms aren't putting them into silos.

The Decade's 10 Most Influential Videogames | WIRED
The 2010s were a turbulent time for videogames . Bolstered by a rapidly expanding ecosystem of online distribution marketplaces, independent games ballooned, touching every part of the industry and reshaping the entire landscape. As that happened, big-budget gaming became even bigger, costing more and simultaneously generating higher revenues. In that environment, change moved fast and freely.
I can't tell you how many games I've played in the last decade that are clearly riffing on Thirty Flights of Loving . The first and shortest game on this list, Thirty Flights of Loving is a first-person spy thriller clocking in at just about 15 minutes. I'd be remiss to mention more, because part of the thrill of Thirty Flights is experiencing it while not fully knowing what's going to happen.

Video games: scourge or savior? - MIT Technology Review
The school bell rings, and teenagers flood the hallways. Many pull out Cybikos popular handheld devices that are a combination personal digital assistant, wireless messenger and game machine. This is the new face of video gaming mobile, networked, interactive. On the other side of that, Takahashi recognizes the risk of becoming dull if everything and everyone were the same. "That's going to be a super boring world," he says. "Differences make our culture so deep."
The game is not necessarily about differences or togetherness though. "I'm not sure if Wattam is about friendship. I don't have so many friends. I'm not such a friendly person," he says. "But I know that relationships with other people are so important. We cannot be alone. We have to work together to solve the issue." As a nod to Wattam , he adds, "Playing a game with a friend is more fun than playing alone."

3. Do you believe first person shooter games increase the likelihood of mass shootings in those with an unstable mindset?
When you have a rating system (e.g., Entertainment Software Rating Board) for any entertainment product it means that, on some basic level, people are concerned about the impact it has on health and well-being. A strict rating system could be beneficial especially if the parents, teachers, scientists, game designers, politicians, etc. who are involved are educated about gaming, psychological development, and aggression.
The Best Game of 2019 Can Only Be Explained With Incredible Tweets - VICE
The older I get, the more I know what I want out of a video game, and 2019 simply didn't have a lot of it. Every year has its high points and low points, and 2019 was no different in that respect. But this is the first time in a long time that I struggled coming up with 10 new games I played this year, let alone 10 new games that I really loved.
For that reason, I'm commemorating 2019 with a list not just of my favorite games, but the games that defined it for me, for better or worse.
