The 10 best video games of 2019 - The Washington Post

As the gaming industry revs up for the next console cycle — set to begin late next year when Sony and Microsoft kickoff the ninth console generation — economic tallies show the industry to be in good shape. According to an industry report published by Newzoo, consumers will spend over $152 billion on games this year, an increase of more than 9% over last year.

Although this year didn't see the emergence of any industry-shaking trends, there were plenty of games released in 2019 to cater to a wide variety of tastes, from all-ages titles such as "Luigi's Mansion 3" to games such as "Sekiro: Shadows: Die Twice," targeted at challenge-hungry players. In assembling this year's top 10 list, I leaned toward the titles that surprised me with their forward-thinking aesthetics, challenges to convention or sheer ability to dazzle.

Five things AI firms can learn from video games success

The video games market has been through several ups and downs, much like the AI industry, and continues to perform despite the doubters much like AI will need to do. AI itself has come under public fire on numerous occasions as fears over the greater implications of its implementation still linger.

Video game companies have taught tech companies around the world that market swings are natural and that when they happen it's best to avoid quick cash grabs and go for value over time products.

30 Under 30 In Games 2020: The Indies And Innovators Influencing How We Game

Twenty-six-year-old Justin Stander found success in the indie gaming world through a bathrobe-wearing samurai with a particular interest in synth-driven '80s music. His first commercial game, Katana ZERO , charmed both critics and audiences with its fast-paced, time-warping gameplay, selling 500,000 copies and generating $5 million in less than a year. He did it against a rough backdrop—most indie games make around $16,000 in their first year.

Christmas-themed video games are scarce for a reason

Even though so much of the world's media and merchandise are saturated by Christmas propaganda with Santa acting as the poster boy, you'd be pressed to find a video game entirely dedicated to Christmas.

Santa has been slapped on everything from movies and TV to Coca-Cola bottles. The big man is so popular that during the holidays, you'd be hard-pressed to find an American mall without a half-drunk Saint Nick making empty promises to small children.

PlayStation anniversary issue: 25 years of games and consoles - The Verge

Twenty-five years ago, the original PlayStation ushered in the era of 3D gaming on a home console. Over that period, the company has consistently changed things up with new advancements, whether that's the DVD storage of the PS2 or the influential twin-stick design of the DualShock controller. It's hard to argue today that the video game industry isn't better with Sony in it.

The company's influence now spans four generations of hardware — alongside a pair of portable spinoffs — and some of the biggest modern franchises in video games. That includes the likes of Uncharted , God of War , Gran Turismo , and a host of indie games and innovative titles like Shadow of the Colossus .
