Gaming is now humanity's favorite form of entertainment, and the medium's legacy was cemented this past decade. While the early 2000s saw video games honing their ability to tell stories and build worlds in 3-D, this last decade built off those nuts and bolts of game making and propelled the medium toward bigger ambitions like open-world design, virtual and augmented reality and an influx of new genres such as battle-royale multiplayer.
Video games have experienced a rapidly changing landscape in technology, business models (i.e. microtransactions and the sale of seasonal battle passes), and its market which now includes more female gamers and an older average audience. We've seen an increase in diversity in games themselves, too, from the varied races and backgrounds for characters in Overwatch to blockbusters like Horizon: Zero Dawn, which features a headstrong female lead.

2019 wasn't a 'bad year' for video games, but it sure was a weird one - CNET
So, playing it safe, I'm not going to say 2019 was a bad year for video games. But it's fair to say it was a weird one.

What do next generation consoles look like? How will they transform how we purchase and consume interactive experiences? What about the video games themselves?
The answers to these questions may end up being far more conservative and status quo than we're dreaming of, but console releases do tend to kickstart a new wave of innovation. In 2019 we could only speculate, in 2020 we'll get answers.
Apple TV+ video game comedy series 'Mythic Quest' debuts February 7th | Engadget
Ubisoft's mysterious Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet will soon see the light of day. Apple has revealed that the video game spoof will debut on February 7th, with all nine episodes of the season available at the same time. The story is the brainchild of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creators Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, and tracks game developers as they "navigate the challenges" of running a major video game.
Mythic Quest is an unusual addition to the Apple TV+ lineup, which has so far focused mostly on serious dramas and children's programming . It's also unusual among streaming shows -- there have certainly been shows based on games , but it's not often that you see a riff on game development. We wouldn't count on this being the video game equivalent to Silicon Valley , but the creative talent involved is promising.
These were the top-selling video games of 2019 at Amazon and GameStop | Thinknum Media
Next year, Sony ( $NYSE:SNE ) and Microsoft ( $NASDAQ:MSFT ) both have new consoles coming out, at which team we may see titles for those new machines dominate 2020. But for 2019, Nintendo ruled.
Both lists have been edited to remove duplicate listings, gift cards, accessories, and other non-game items. The Amazon list, in particular, had a cutoff: a minimum of 14 days on the best-sellers list. Some games were number 1 for a day or two, but then fell off, and that doesn't accurately represent what sold the best year-round.

Why video games and board games aren't a good measure of AI intelligence - The Verge
Measuring the intelligence of AI is one of the trickiest but most important questions in the field of computer science. If you can't understand whether the machine you've built is cleverer today than it was yesterday, how do you know you're making progress?
At first glance, this might seem like a non-issue. "Obviously AI is getting smarter" is one reply. "Just look at all the money and talent pouring into the field. Look at the milestones, like beating humans at Go, and the applications that were impossible to solve a decade ago that are commonplace today, like image recognition. How is that not progress?"

1) Children of Morta (Dead Mage) The Bergson family have a lovely home that looks like something out of a pixelated Wes Anderson movie – if it weren't for the pesky Corruption that lies in dungeons underneath the floorboards. Luckily the Bergsons know a thing or two about fighting, each with their own unique style, from close-quarters melee to ranged archery. Defeat enemies and bosses, level up, learn new skills, and spend some downtime with the fam.
2) Old Lefty's Rubbin' 'n' Racin' (Old Lefty's Arcade) If there was any justice in the world, this currently one-off, event-specific game would be in every bar. It's a one-button, four-player racing game that's as simple as it is charming. The top-down tracks make for quick matches and lend themselves to player-demanded rematches. Remember the name Old Lefty and keep an eye out for this one at local events.
When is a video game not a video game? Divinity: Original Sin gets the tabletop treatment - CNET
Kieron Kelly from game developer Larian Studios came by the CNET offices to show off a work-in-progress prototype and play a few rounds before taking the game to the PAX Unplugged convention in Philadelphia, where I also got to see it in action.

Playing a few rounds with Kelly, I was struck by how Larian and Lynnvander Studios, the board game design studio it partnered with, translated a turn-based adventure RPG into something unexpected, building set pieces around a circular main board, bouncing back and forth between varied locations and a novella-sized storybook to drive the narrative.
Give video gaming a try in library's Young Adult area | Bettendorf | qctimes.com
Some may wonder what place video games hold in libraries, the answer is simple: our mission at the LeClaire Community Library is to enhance the intellectual, social, and cultural strength of our community. Video games provide all these elements with their compelling storylines and diverse game mechanics.
I have been a gamer for about as long as I could walk, and many of my favorite stories stem from video games. Playing video games comes with a multitude of cognitive benefits. According to "Psychology Today," benefits include improved spatial attention, reduced impulsiveness, and improved ability to engage in multiple tasks simultaneously. Based on my experience, most video games also contain one objective yet a wide range of paths on reaching the goal.
