CHEROKEE, Iowa (AP) — For many of us who are members of older generations, we might consider the hours younger people spend playing video games as nothing more than a diversion from doing something more productive, such as homework.
But talk to Tyler Hahn for a little bit, and he'll tell you there's much to be learned from gaming.
It might not be as measurable as an A on a math test, but as the sponsor of a unique program for middle school students in Cherokee, Hahn has watched video games open children's minds to career possibilities while developing skills that will help them in the future.

The best feature of this console generation? Suspended games. - Polygon
Years ago, I remember reading Atari Age magazine, someone wrote in to say that they had left their Atari VCS turned on with Video Chess plugged into the cartridge slot, but disconnected everything else. When they plugged the machine back into the RF adapter, they saw that the CPU had moved the pieces, for both sides.
For the truly dedicated gamer, drastic, long-term pauses are nothing new. When I wrote for Kotaku a decade ago, we asked readers the longest they ever left a game on standby. The winner, by a country mile, was someone who said they left their PSOne on pause, with the drive spinning, for more than a year. So long the LED burned a ring into the disc. In the long skein of video game history, that tale stands out forever.

How the PlayStation's DualShock shaped modern controllers - The Verge
If you were told to draw a video game controller, what would it look like? Odds are, you'd scribble a rectangle with two downward wings for your palms to grip, a D-pad, four face buttons, shoulder triggers, and a pair of thumbsticks. In other words, you'd draw a PlayStation controller. Sony didn't invent the controller, but it did essentially invent modern controller design, shaping the look and ergonomics of how we've interacted with games for over two decades.
There's plenty of credit to award when it comes to video game controller design. Nintendo pioneered the core button layout with the SNES (D-pad on one side, face buttons on the other), and both Nintendo and Sega beat Sony to shipping an analog thumbstick for their consoles. But ultimately, it's Sony's innovations and ideas that would go on to become the elemental base of what we think of as a "video game controller."

This year, we have seen some long-awaited sequels, reboots, and new series be released. There was a multitude of gaming conventions, events, and contests, each seeing an increase in attendance from various ages. Here is hoping that 2020 will see that continue to climb.
Regardless of the platform you use — Play Station 4 (PS4), Xbox One (XBO), Nintendo Switch (NS), Computer (PC), etc. — there is a game for you to enjoy playing. I cannot wait to see what games will be announced and released in 2020.
Esports makes its way into San Diego high schools and has boosted some students into college -
The San Diego County Office of Education has taken up an unusual approach to engaging students in school — encouraging more video games.
The county office recently held its first esports competition in Fashion Valley Mall involving several school teams around the county. It's part of growing trend of schools who hope that by creating esports teams these video games can become catalysts for learning, socialization and career development.
Esports refers to the growing national phenomenon of organized competitive gaming. Esports clubs have opened in uncounted K-12 schools across the country, including at least 17 in San Diego County, and in some colleges nationwide.
