Thrill-Seekers And Adrenaline Junkies Explained : Shots - Health News : NPR

Psychologist Ken Carter studies why some people seek out haunted houses and other thrills — even though he's not one of them. Kay Hinton/Emory University hide caption

For answers, NPR's Maddie Sofia , host of the daily science podcast Short Wave , spoke with the guy who wrote the book on what makes those folks tick. Ken Carter teaches psychology at Oxford College of Emory University and is the author of Buzz-- Inside the Minds of Thrill-Seekers, Daredevils and Adrenaline Junkies .

In the book, Carter — a self-proclaimed lover of calm — gets into the minds of a "subset of people who crave stimulation and thrive in environments that would seem overstimulating, even chaotic, to the rest of us."

Sofia and Carter discussed the biology and psychology of thrill seeking, what adaptive benefit it might provide and their own levels of thrill tolerance. "This [interview] is about as much excitement as I can take," said Carter.

A Scientist Made a Calculator That Shows The Risk of an Actual Vampire Apocalypse

Let say we started out with the set-up from your favourite vampire novel: Do Bram Stoker's Dracula vampires take over the world faster than vampires in True Blood or those in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles ?

Dominik Czernia, a physicist at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kraków, Poland decided to find out, after seeing a paper by an international team of scientists investigating mathematical models of vampires and humans in fiction.

"That drew my attention and I decided to test it out in a scientific way with the well-known theory predator-prey model, based on game theory! In the book, Carter — a self-proclaimed lover of calm — gets into the minds of a "subset of people who crave stimulation and...!! All of this was challenging and, because I focused on the calculator in my free time, it took me about a month to finish everything."

Things Go BOOM at King’s College, for Halloween, science fun | Times Leader

Dozens of eager children waved their “pick-me, pick-me” arms, each hoping associate professor of chemistry Trent Snider would choose him or her to help with a scientific demo Tuesday evening as the 23rd annual “Things that Go Boom in the Night” got under way at King’s College.

“I need somebody who comes every year,” Snider said, choosing a girl in a Superwoman costume.

“Now, someone whose favorite subject is science,” he said, choosing a third young helper.

Carefully donning safety goggles, the helpers each took a turn holding a long-handled torch to one of three balloons filled with hydrogen.

Thanks to the resulting “booms” and balls of fire, perhaps science had just become the favorite subject of everyone in a crowded Burke Auditorium, from parents and Scoutmasters to kids like 10-year-old Madison Dempsey, of Swoyersville.

Mechanical engineer's simple running hack is fun and increases efficiency -- ScienceDaily

Attention runners: The next time you go out for a jog, you might want to strap a light resistance band between your feet. This rather quirky but oddly effective hack, according to UC Santa Barbara mechanical engineer Elliot Hawkes, could make you a more efficient runner by approximately 6.4%.

"In running, the energy is mostly wasted," said Hawkes, who conducted research on this topic while at Stanford University! Running is an extremely inefficient activity for the human body (which is why it's also a calorie-torching workout). According to Hawkes' study, for every 10 calories burned, less than one calorie is needed to maintain a constant forward velocity! The other nine calories are spent keeping us from falling as we pound the pavement with our bodymass, as well as braking and accelerating the swinging leg. Hawkes noticed this inefficiency while biking at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco at a cycling track concentric with a running track.

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Composting can be fun at-home science experiment

To begin the process, an at-home gardener or environmentally conscious individual really only needs two elements – browns and greens! Videos for Thrill - Seekers And Adrenaline Junkies 2:31 Traveling Conservationists spread the word to save the world Facebook!! The browns can be found covering lawns and clogging storm drains in the form of leaves, while the greens are all those vegetable plants that have produced all they can for the year and now need to be pulled from the ground to get the area ready for next year. It's really that simple, said Lauren Judd, programs coordinator and educator for the Cornucopia Project.

Most people will take all those leaves and spent plantings and toss them over the fence (if the property allows) or bring them to the local recycling center, but putting them into a designated area can create a great nutrient-rich source for next year's plantings.

The browns provide the carbon side of the equation, while the greens add the nitrogen, which is really all you need to get the process started for an at-home compost! Adrenaline Junkie: Test, Addiction, Activities, Relaxation ...www.healthline.com /health/ adrenaline - junkie Adrenaline junkie is a phrase that's used to describe people who enjoy intense and thrilling activities that generate an adrenaline rush .
