Secret consumer score: what Airbnb, Yelp, and more are doing with your data - The Verge

When you try to return an item at Best Buy or Sephora, before deciding whether to take back the item, those businesses have apparently been secretly looking at something called your consumer score — a hidden rating based on data you didn't even give them that determines how they treat you, according to Kashmir Hill's recent expose for The New York Times . Apparently, your consumer score determines how long you're kept on the line when calling customer service.

Surprisingly, some of these third-party companies are willing to show you what data they have on you. Hill found out how to request her data from five of these companies, and the article explains what happened when she did. Sift, a company that looks for fraud, gave her a 400-page file that included a Yelp order for chicken tikka masala, vegetable samosas, and garlic naan she made on her iPhone three years ago.

Scholars have found what appear to be other "Paradise Lost" acrostics, including one discovered in 1977.

Handke’s Yugoslav passport is important because of an ongoing international controversy over the Nobel organization giving what is considered the world’s most important literary prize to a writer accused of being a genocide apologist . Handke and his defenders, including the Nobel Committee for Literature and the Swedish Academy, which selected Handke for the 2019 award, have insisted that his books, plays, and interviews about Bosnia have been generally fair and even-handed.

Rand Paul blocks resolution aimed at keeping whistleblower identity secret

Senate Republicans blocked a resolution aimed at keeping secret the identity of a whistleblower whose complaint against President Trump sparked an impeachment investigation.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and his fellow Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii introduced a resolution stating Congress has "a duty" to protect the identity of whistleblowers.

"In normal times we would be protecting the whistleblower," Hirono said. "That is what this resolution does."

Harvard's Michael Norton Talks 'Secret Menu' Phenomenon

Behavioral Economist and Harvard Business School Professor Michael Norton stopped by the Boston Public Radio studios Wednesday to discuss research from H.B.S. Doctoral Student Dafna Goor, on why consumers seem so enticed by the idea of exclusivity — perceived or otherwise.

Restaurants like Chipotle, Starbucks, and In-N-Out Burger all offer so-called "secret menu" options, which can typically be found on a restaurant's website or smartphone app. At Starbucks, for example, there are nearly 40 additional drinks that patrons can order, from the "Apple Pie Frappuccino" to something called the "Black Eye."

Exclusive: Brooklyn DA Releases Secret Lists Of Cops They Don't Trust - Gothamist

Brooklyn prosecutors, complying with a Freedom of Information Law request from Gothamist/WNYC, have released the names of dozens of officers whose credibility has been called into question.

The list includes 53 cases, some of which are sealed, between 2008 and 2019 in which officers had their testimony discredited or called into question by state and federal judges.

In a separate federal gun possession case, a judge accused Police Officer Andrew Kamna of lying to justify stopping a man named Raymond Jones. The case against Jones was later dismissed. (Gothamist/WNYC attempted to reach Kamna through his union, but did not receive a response by publication time.)
