When IBM's Deep Blue chess machine defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, the world responded with surprise and angst at how far computers had come: " Be Afraid ," read a Weekly Standard headline reacting to the news.
Artificial intelligence has since made advancements that were unthinkable just 20 years ago — in the past decade alone, robots have achieved dominance over humans in games far more complex than chess.
While most of those advances can't be quantified with milestones like chess victories, programmers have continued the tradition of building machines designed to outsmart humans at our own games.

Layoffs are generally a bad thing, except when they happen to robots. Apparently predictions of the great artificial intelligence world takeover were a little premature.
Boeing gave their large-scale robotic system the old heave-ho recently after years of messing up the assembly of the 777X fuselage. They plan to defy convention and actually use human machinists to do the job, who probably taunted the robots on their way out. Fortunately the robots were unaffected since they lack emotion chips.
U. of Houston first Texas campus to deploy Starship delivery robots - CR80News
Starship Technologies’ march on college campuses continues this week, with the addition of the University of Houston to the company’s autonomous robot delivery service. The Starship robots will now deliver food and drinks from participating merchants to students on the Houston campus.
According to an official university release , Houston’s agreement with Starship will see a fleet of 30 autonomous robots deployed in partnership with the university’s food service provider, Chartwells. The service is available to all of Houston’s 53,000 students, faculty and staff, and makes Houston the first university in the state of Texas to offer robotic food deliveries on campus.

During the last Democratic debate, in Ohio, there was a moment that stood out. Elizabeth Warren and I got into a debate over the impact of automation versus trade on the elimination of manufacturing jobs. I didn't really understand what that meant until I saw this incredible concept video of what might be possible with the new APIs. Aibo helped monitor a microwave, turn on a robot vacuum, remind a child that she had left the fridge open, and... act as surveillance camera for the child's mom?

Engineers are making strides on the design of four-legged robots and their ability to run , jump and even do backflips. But getting two-legged, humanoid robots to exert force or push against something without falling has been a significant stumbling block.
The team’s robot, physically resembling a machined torso and two legs, is controlled remotely by a human operator wearing a vest that transmits information about the human’s motion and ground reaction forces to the robot.

Retailers and logistics operators facing a tight labor market are ramping up automation at warehouses for the holidays, when online order volumes can surge tenfold as consumers load up digital shopping carts in the weeks around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
To cope, some businesses are ordering up extra fleets of collaborative robots , or "cobots," that use cameras, lasers and sensors to navigate warehouse aisles and lead workers to the right shelves or to shuttle bins full of products between workstations. Many are available for lease.
