New York City on Monday warned FedEx to ‘terminate’ any operation of its delivery robots in the Big Apple, after a fleet of the androids were spotted rolling around lower Manhattan last week.
“You are hereby directed to immediately cease and desist operating your SameDay Bots on the streets and sidewalks in the City of New York,” lawyers for the Dept. of Transportation wrote to FedEx, in a letter obtained by The Post.

Robots, Drones Among Startups in Verizon's 5G First Responder Lab - Robotics Business Review
Robotics and aerial drone startup companies were among those chosen by Verizon to participate in the company's "Cohort 3" for the 5G First Responder Lab. The startups in the Cohort 3 group will focus on developing artificial intelligence for weapon detection, geo-intelligence, autonomous security, and smart cities solutions, powered by Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network, the company said in a statement.

"As our final cohort of the year, we're excited to welcome Cohort 3 to the 5G First Responder Lab," said Nick Nilan, director of public safety product development at Verizon. "The innovative technologies developed and fostered by Cohorts 1 and 2 will make an incredible difference in the market, and we can't wait to see what Cohort 3 develops during their time in the lab."
Robots at Amazon warehouses linked to more serious workplace injury
But that's not all: These stats worsen significantly in warehouses where Amazon has introduced robots designed to increase efficiency, and even safety. For example, robots are used to bring shelves of products to workers so that they don't have to walk miles and miles throughout their workday. Robots also send products down conveyer belts so workers can easily retrieve items for order.
But, instead of making employees' workplaces safer, data indicates that they could be having the opposite effect. Reveal says that of the 23 warehouses from which it obtained records (there are 110 facilities total in the U.S.), "most" of the ones with the highest injury levels used robots:
Grocery-carrying robots are coming. Do we need them? - The Salt Lake Tribune
Boston •The first cargo-carrying robot marketed directly to consumers is on sale this holiday season. But how many people are ready to ditch their second car to buy a two-wheeled rover that can follow them around like a dog?
Corporate giants like Amazon, FedEx and Ford have already been experimenting with sending delivery robots to doorsteps. Now Piaggio, the Italian company that makes the Vespa scooter, is offering a stylish alternative to those blandly utilitarian machines — albeit one that weighs 50 pounds and costs $3,250.

The ACLU wants details about videos of Boston Dynamics robot in police exercises –
Back in April at our robotics event at UC Berkeley, Boston Dynamics head Marc Raibert showed off video of the company's Spot robot in a number of different real world scenarios. Some, like construction and first responders, were familiar to anyone who has been following the company — and automation in general.

All these months later, the video has raised some questions among some civil liberties groups — including, mostly notably, the Massachusetts wing of the ACLU . A public records request filed by the organization is in response to a Facebook post by the department describing the July event that, "seeks to learn more about how your agency uses or has contemplated using robotics."
CES 2020 Guide: All The Robots You Can Handle
The Consumer Electronics Show aka CES is nearly upon us and for the 180,000 trade professionals expected to descend upon the world's largest technology show, preparation is key. With 2.9 million net square feet of flying taxis, talking refrigerators and super cute robots sprawled across nearly a dozen venues on the Las Vegas Strip, you're going to need a plan.
To make the most of your adventure, below is what you need to know right now and I'll be updating as more news gets announced.
New metallic material for flexible soft robots -- ScienceDaily
Because these robots need to be flexible, they are often made from soft materials such as paper, plastic and rubber. To be functional, sensors and electrical components are often added on top, but these add bulk to the devices.
Now, a team of NUS researchers has developed a novel method of creating a new metal-based material for use in these soft robots.
Combining metals such as platinum with burnt paper (ash), the new material has enhanced capabilities while maintaining the foldability and lightweight features of traditional paper and plastic. In fact, the new material is half as light as paper, which also makes it more power efficient.
STMicrolectronics, Maxon Team Up on Servo Control Kit for Robots - Robotics Business Review
GENEVA and SACHSEIN, Switzerland – STMicroelectronics and maxon today announced a joint collaboration to help accelerate the design of robotics applications and industrial servo drives. At the sps 2019 trade show in Nuremberg, Germany, the companies will demonstrate a jointly developed servo control kit.
The EVALKIT-ROBOT-1 is a plug-and-play system aimed to help users more easily approach the world of precise positioning and high-end motion in servo drives and robotics, the companies said. A maxon 100-watt BLDC motor with built-on 1024-pulse incremental encoder is included in the kit, showcasing its magnetic design to ensure smoothness and balance for fine control, even at low rotor speeds.
