Mysterious oil spill threatens marine biodiversity haven in Brazil | Science | AAAS

A Brazilian volunteer cleans oil at a beach in Lauro de Freitas in Bahia state on 2 November. Small blobs have now reached Abrolhos Bank, home to some of Brazil's most iconic marine species.

Marine scientists in Brazil are closely monitoring the incursion of a mysterious oil spill into the largest biodiversity hot spot in the South Atlantic Ocean. The region, known as the Abrolhos Bank, shelters almost 9000 square kilometers of reefs in shallow, warm waters along the central part of the Brazilian coastline.

More than 4000 tons of crude oil residue from an unknown source have landed on the country's northeast seaboard since late August, contaminating hundreds of beaches, estuaries, reefs, and mangroves along a 2500-kilometer stretch of shoreline.

Concerns escalated earlier last week as the wave of sticky oil patches began to encroach on the Abrolhos Bank's northern border, on the southern coast of Bahia state! Ask Amy: Mysterious photo invites ethical question - The Washington Post

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you there's a strong family resemblance. There's no evidence in bank records that he'd been sending money to this woman and the girl. But he traveled a lot for business, so it's plausible that he was in South America during this time.

I strongly suspect that this girl is our first cousin. It would probably not be too difficult to find her, but should I?

Part of me wonders if she would welcome this news, or if it's not news to her, if she would welcome contact from American cousins 20 years older than she.

Concerned Cousins: The ethical thing to do is to try to find this cousin. And, yes, you are obligated to do the ethical thing.

Assuming that the will is not valid, if there are items included in this document that you and your sister can provide (material possessions or money), it would be kind of you to attempt to fulfill your uncle's wishes! Mysterious Brazil oil spill linked to Greek-flagged ship that left Venezuela, investigators say |

Brazilian authorities investigating a mysterious oil spill that's forced the closure of hundreds of beaches along a 1,300-mile stretch of the country’s coastline reportedly are now pointing their fingers at a Greek-flagged ship.

“There is strong evidence that the company, the captain and the vessel’s crew failed to communicate to authorities about the oil spill/release of the crude oil in the Atlantic Ocean,” Brazilian prosecutors said in a statement obtained by  Reuters .

In a search order described Friday by The Associated Press, prosecutors also said "there is no indication of another boat" that could have discharged the Venezuelan crude into the sea.

Mysterious Utility Box Shows Up In Resident’s Yard: ‘I Want It Removed’ –

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – Imagine waking up to find an electrical tower of some sort being installed in your front yard. The homeowner still doesn’t know exactly what it is, but she wants to know why it was installed without notice, and she wants it gone.

* * *

Williams woke up to find contractors in her driveway last Monday, and now a week later she still has no answers about what it is or where it came from.

“I haven't received any type of literature about this so this is just me walking outside one day and being blindsided this was being installed in my yard," she said.

The men installing the box led her to believe it was a small cell tower which would eventually help build a future 5G network in Aurora.

"Then they said they were just doing their job so you know it is what it is, and they were like, ‘at least you’ll have faster service in the area,’" she laughed.

EPA: Mysterious mold and smog abound after federal inaction -- Monday, November 4, 2019 --

Baudoinia compniacensis , a little-studied black mold associated with alcohol aging, is growing all over the otherwise idyllic town Weiss leads here in southeastern Indiana. Sullying everything from home siding to utility poles, the fungus is most noticeable near the MGP Ingredients distillery, where his son works as a plant operator.

"It's not a bad company," he said in a recent interview. "I just wish that the whiskey fungus wasn't there because, if it wasn't for that, I would say my 3 ½ years of being mayor would be really good."

A political independent who's running unopposed for a second term tomorrow, Weiss had hoped EPA would force MGPI to reduce the facility's fungus-forming ethanol emissions. At the end of the Obama administration, the agency had accused MGPI of building six new whiskey aging warehouses without a permit to emit ethanol, which also can create lung-scaring smog — a major problem for nearby Cincinnati.
