Happy Halloween from NASA: Space agency shares spookiest pumpkins from annual contest | Science |

NASA’s Arielle Samuelson said: “In a dark conference room, a pumpkin gently landed on the Moon, its retrorockets smouldering, while across the room, a flying saucer pumpkin hovered above Area 51 as a pumpkin alien wreaked havoc.

“Suffice to say that when the scientists and engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, compete in a pumpkin-carving contest, the solar system's the limit.

“Now in its ninth year, the contest gives teams only one hour to carve – off the clock, on their lunch break – though they can prepare non-pumpkin materials — like backgrounds, sound effects and motorised parts — ahead of time.”

The pumpkin was designed to represent the historic Eagle Lunar Module (LM) used in the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing.

NASA news: Space agency unveils stunning photo of ISS transiting Sun | Science | News |

The ISS is then visible only just after sunset or just before sunrise because it shines by reflected sunlight - once the ISS enters the Earth’s shadow, it will drop out of sight.

The only occasion when the ISS is visible during the day is when it passes right in front of the Sun.

NASA’s photograph is a series of images taken a month ago from Santa Fe, Argentina with perfect timing.

NASA said in a statement: “This image series was later combined with a separate image highlighting the texture of the spotless Sun, and an image bringing up the Sun’s prominences around the edge.

“At an unusually low Solar Minimum, the Sun has gone without sunspots now for most of 2019.”

The 360-ton space station is a little larger than a five-bedroom house, just much longer and narrower.

UK space sector eyes future outside EU

Echoing ongoing speculation about the United Kingdom's post-Brexit future as an economic and diplomatic player, the county's future as a space power remains uncertain.

On the day - 31 October - that but for the latest delay would have been its last as a member of the EU, delegates to a London conference on the future of the UK's space sector got a clear message from government and industry: while ambition remains top-tier, the country faces an urgent need to take bold decisions about how to exploit its strengths while losing access to around half of European spending on space.

The dilemma facing UK companies and researchers was spelled out by Magali Vaissiere, who heads the European Space Agency's (ESA) ECSAT research unit at Harwell, near Oxford.

When ministers from the governments of ESA's 22 member states meet on 27-28 November in Seville to agree the agency's budget for the coming three years, they will be discussing spending proposals totalling more than €12 billion ($13 billion).

NASA news: Space agency's curiosity rover makes groundbreaking discovery on Mars | Science | News

The rover has uncovered a vital part of Mars’ history, finding an unusual Gale Crater not the Red Planet’s surface! Videos for Happy Halloween From NASA : Space Agency 0:27 Happy Halloween from NASA : Space agency shares spookiest pumpkins from annual contest express.co.uk!! The crater is unusual in its appearance, resembling a giant ring produced by an impact some 3.5billion years ago.

Despite its being a crater, a mountain protrudes and shoots up straight from the middle, known as Mt. Sharp after geologist Rovert P. Sharp.

Despite the strange mountain fixture in its centre, scientists have been drawn more to Mars orbiters detecting signals that have suggested a mix of sediments in the crater, indicating a hitherto understood complex history.

The rover landed on Mars in August 2012 and has since scoured the land in an attempt to further humankind’s understanding of foreign worlds.

Scientists using satellites orbiting Mars have detected sedimentary signifiers of a multitude of climatic eras all within the same place.

New Zealand Space Agency aims for sustainability, agility, collaboration - SpaceNews.com

WASHINGTON – The New Zealand Space Agency is moving quickly to develop a comprehensive strategy reflecting its priorities including sustainability, agility and collaboration, said agency head Peter Crabtree.

The agency's focus on sustainability stems, in part, from the work of Rocket Lab, the launch vehicle company planning frequent flights from its site on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula! "Since we were going to follow on this journey with Rocket Lab and it was going to be heading towards launching once or twice a week, then as the launch state we would be taking on a lot of responsibility," Crabtree, who leads the agency established in 2016, said Oct. 22 during a reception at the New Zealand embassy.
