Experts said more research was needed on the therapeutic value of gaming, but there was "scope" for it to help mental health problems.

She explained that her anxiety was "easier to cope with because I'm not face-to-face with somebody" when talking online.

"I feel I can be more myself, whereas I'd normally be very nervous. I'm far more relaxed and happy when I'm online."

Florida Poly students unveil video game creations at Lakeland expo - News - The Ledger -

Florida Polytechnic students displays prototypes of video games they have developed in semi-annual Game Expo on campus.

LAKELAND — Keegan Sommer's face glowed almost as brightly as his purple shirt Thursday morning as he watched two fellow Florida Polytechnic University students attempt to demolish each other's military tanks. Virtually, that is.

Sommer, a senior majoring in computer engineering, stood beside a table where other students could grab controllers and play a video game he created called Tank Game. He and other students unveiled their designs at Florida Poly Game Expo, an event held each semester.

Research by academics at the University of York indicates that the prevalence of loot boxes – virtual bundles of random items exchanged for real-world money – is continuing to grow on desktop games: in the group of top games studied, the presence of loot boxes has increased from about 4% to 71% over the past nine years.

Google Stadia: Video game cloud streaming service launches Tuesday

Google flips the switch Tuesday on its Stadia cloud gaming service, which lets you stream games to your television, computer, tablet and Android phone.

The main selling point? Stadia lets you play marquee video games without the need of a game console or PC to house the game. Instead your game resides on Google's expansive array of data servers.

Games delivered and stored in the cloud are a strategy aimed at attracting potential players who don't want to commit to a specific console system or spring for a personal computer. And the flexibility of Stadia, which lets you play games on smartphones, tablets and the web, could appeal to an audience used to bingeing video anywhere and anytime on any device.
