Record-busting shoes loom large in marathon debate - Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A shoe debate is raging ahead of Sunday’s New York City Marathon after high-tech sneakers played starring roles in two of the biggest distance-running achievements this year.

Eliud Kipchoge’s sub-two-hour marathon in Vienna and Brigid Kosgei’s record-breaking run at the Chicago Marathon last month brought the Nike Vaporfly shoes into focus, sparking heated debate over whether the hyper-advanced footwear gave an unfair advantage.

Shalane Flanagan, who won in New York in 2017, told Reuters the running community should “always question what’s going on” in her sport but said the debate should not overshadow individual performances.

“You could give the pair of shoes to Joe Shmo off the street – they can’t go run what Eliud ran or Brigid Kosgei,” said Flanagan, a Nike athlete who recently retired from competition and was consulted in the creation of the shoe.

Rulemaking on China Buying Advanced US Tech Needs Urgent Action, Lawmaker Says

A ranking Republican lawmaker is calling for the government to speed up its plans to establish rules on exports of critical U.S. technologies to China , expressing a “deep concern” at the current rate of the regulatory rollout.

"While our regulatory process moves slowly, China is sprinting ahead to acquire critical technology by any means necessary," U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a letter to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, seen by Reuters and dated Oct. 18.

The letter seeks an update and timeline on rules, mandated by a law passed last year, to beef up oversight of exports of critical U.S. technologies. The regulations are meant to quell purported risks to national security amid a rising threat from China.

That threat was highlighted during a recent Washington panel discussion where a U.S. defense official sounded the alarm over Beijing’s current lead in a number of emerging revolutionary technology industries. Panelists at the headquarters of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said America’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) must change when it comes to technology transfers.

Advanced Technology Recycling's Las Vegas facility receives R2 certification - Recycling Today

Advanced Technology Recycling (ATR), a sustainable IT asset disposition (ITAD) solutions and secure destructions provider in headquartered in Pontiac, Illinois, has achieved R2:2013, ISO:14001 and OHSAS:18001 certifications at its Las Vegas facility located at 4120 W. Windmill Lane, Suite 105.

The recently opened 20,000-square-foot facility was not scheduled to receive this certification until the end of 2019, but a newly developed ATR compliance team accomplished this milestone in about nine months, the company reports in a news release on its certification. The ATR compliance team worked closely with local teams to deploy a standardized operations procedure, or SOP, that is in use at the company's other eight certified facilities.

"The audit, which was performed by Orion Registrar scored a near perfect score and was noted as having 'highly knowledgeable staff,' 'sustainable practices for warehouse supply reuse' and 'best in practice' documentation for the ATR Master Material Flow List," says Christopher Jackson, corporate compliance manager for ATR. "When we learned the Blind Center of Nevada had lost their R2 certification in June we shifted into high gear so companies in the region would have a certified processor available."
