As for educational games, they've come a long way since the days of Castle of Dr. Brain and Wally Bear and the No! Gang . For starters they can be fun—and not in a "it's this or flashcards" kind of way. In fact, some of the best learning video games weren't even developed education in mind.
The Minecraft phenomenon needs no introduction. Kids will gladly spend hours playing and exploring their blocky, lo-res sandboxes. In that interactive space, a lot of learning can happen.
Quite a lot has been going on:
The Hong Kong-China firestorm is now coming for your video games - HoustonChronicle.com
It’s not just the NBA and the Rockets that are caught up in the China-Hong Kong political storm. One of the world’s most popular online strategy games is also ensnared in the controversy related to the anti-China protests currently roiling Hong Kong — a conflict that is very much relevant to Houston .
Hearthstone, a popular global competitive video game made by Blizzard, was protested and “canceled” by fans last month because some believed the company was censoring free speech in fear of losing business in China.
'Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order' video game: What you should know
First, there was the arrival of "The Mandalorian" on the Disney+ streaming service , which became operational earlier this week. Now, there's "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," a new single-player video game that fleshes out Lucasfilm's space opera.
All this action comes ahead of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (in theaters Dec. 20), the ninth and last film in that saga .
But these two recent entries focus on the past. "The Mandalorian" takes place after about five years after Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and the rebels overthrew the Empire in 1983's "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi."
College students play video games 25 hours straight for a good cause
WHITESBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The Southeast Gamers gathered for their annual "Game Day" at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College to play a variety of video, card, and board games.
Around 70 people participated in the event. The big attractions of the event were the new Call of Duty, Magic and Super Smash Bros. tournaments.
Game companies even donated games to the cause as prizes, allowing participants the opportunity to observe and learn a game, and then possibly win it at the end of the event.
Many things are taking place:
The Secrets of Erin Morgenstern's Success: Say No to the Internet. Say Yes to Video Games.
GAME ON Erin Morgenstern made two important moves in preparing to work on her second novel, "The Starless Sea," which lands at No. 3 on this week's hardcover fiction list. First, she relocated from Manhattan to western Massachusetts, moving into a house that wasn't wired for cable or the internet.
Morgenstern's 2011 debut is a tough act to follow: "The Night Circus" was a No. 1 best seller, and has been translated into 37 languages; a movie version is in the works from Lionsgate. In the wake of the hoopla, which she says was a surprise — "I thought it was going to be a weird book that maybe a few weird people would like, and there were far more weird people than I expected" — Morgenstern started another project, then abandoned it. She wondered why she was writing another book at all.

The DeanBeat: What does video game history mean to you? | VentureBeat
I’m about to co-write another video game history book: volume 2 of The Ultimate History of Video Games. My friend Steven Kent wrote the first volume of this book and published it in 2001. It covered the first 25 years or so of the history of video games. About a decade ago, he stopped writing day-to-day stories on the game industry and began writing science fiction novels.
But his first book did well and so his publisher asked him to do a new version, covering the last 20 years of history. There should be demand for this, since all of us remember our encounters with video games so fondly. The retro craze is in full gear. And Kent’s original book is taught in a lot of college video game programs.
