Why Americans turn to conspiracy theories - The Washington Post

As the impeachment inquiry heats up, members of Congress and the media are left with the difficult job of untangling the conspiracy theory that seems to have driven the president's actions in Ukraine: a wild tale of a missing computer server whisked off to Eastern Europe for nefarious, if never entirely clear, purposes, and something involving Joe Biden, his son Hunter and, for good measure, China, too.

Although a strong vein of conspiratorial thinking courses through the right today, dismissing conspiracy theories as a recent product of the "paranoid style" of the American right underestimates their influence on our political culture as a whole! Perspective | Why Americans turn to conspiracy theories www.washingtonpost.com /outlook/2019/10/21/ why - americans - turn - conspiracy -theories Why Americans turn to conspiracy theories Conspiracy theories have been a central feature in American politics since before the Revolution.!! Just last week, for example, Hillary Clinton claimed without evidence that the Russians were grooming Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard for a third-party run aimed at damaging the eventual Democratic nominee.

Clinton does Democrats no favour reviving Russia conspiracy talk - Cyprus Mail

As a contender for the US presidency in 2016, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was besieged with opposition rumour and conspiracy theories! Why Americans turn to conspiracy theories - Opinion - The ...As the impeachment inquiry heats up, members of Congress and the media are left with the difficult job of untangling the conspiracy theory that seems to have driven the president's actions in ...!! Last week, her most significant contribution to next year’s presidential race so far became indulging in the same game, effectively accusing Democratic challenger and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of being the preferred choice of Russia.

In an interview for a political podcast, Clinton did not mention Gabbard by name, but warned that Russia was supporting a particular candidate who might then run as an independent, undercutting the mainstream Democratic challenger and keeping President Donald Trump in the White House. But a Clinton spokesman later confirmed that was exactly who she meant, saying “if the nesting doll fits” in an apparent reference to traditional Russian dolls.

The dispute between Clinton and Gabbard is not new – the latter earned the fury of the Clintons and those around them by becoming the first female member of Congress to endorse Bernie Sanders in 2015. The tone-deafness with which Clinton apparently felt happy to push allegations of being a foreign “asset” at her, however, speaks to a wider challenge facing much of the traditional political establishment in both major US parties and around the world.

But this time, one of the prominent sceptics is the photographer who took the famous Obama "situation room" image himself – Pete Souza.

Mr Trump is seen sitting at the head of the table in the centre of the photograph, surrounded by his team who are wearing smart suits and ties and are mostly looking towards the camera! On the table there is a mass of ethernet cables, many of which appear not to be plugged into anything.

The image is in stark contrast to the 2011 photograph, in which Mr Obama is not the focus of the overall image, and in which the national security team, dressed in less formal attire, appear tense and are focused on witnessing what is unfolding on an unseen screen out of shot.

Trump's Conspiracy Theories Got Him Into This - The Atlantic

But dig into the academic research on conspiracy theories, and you realize how odd the current environment actually is. Until Trump, scholars assumed that holding the White House inoculated parties from conspiracism! They viewed conspiratorial thinking as a weapon of the weak, which couldn't seriously threaten the republic because its adherents wielded so little influence in government.

That's what makes today's GOP so unusual and so dangerous. Never before in modern American history has a political party been this paranoid and this powerful at the same time.

The real danger isn't the Republican Party's fantasies themselves. It's the realities that Trump and the GOP can use those fantasies to create.
