‘Who leaked?’ An analysis of Republican Sen. Ron Johnson’s conspiracy-filled defense of Trump.

On Friday, a powerful Republican senator indicated to the Wall Street Journal that he had been concerned this summer that President Trump was creating a quid pro quo with Ukraine by holding up military aid. But he appeared to regret sharing something so potentially damaging and immediately tried to walk back his statements
It was probably not a coincidence then that on Sunday, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, went on TV to try to defend the president! In his interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Johnson refused to answer basic questions about why he was concerned about Trump, instead bringing up a completely unrelated conspiracy theory about a former FBI official. "Answer the question that I asked you instead of trying to make Donald Trump feel better here that you're not criticizing him," an exasperated host Chuck Todd says at one point.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Pompeo Defends Trump's Ukraine Conspiracy Theory - The New York Times
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defiantly insisted on Saturday in Greece that the Trump administration was right to ask Ukrainian officials to investigate claims of election interference in the 2016 American presidential campaign, bolstering a widely debunked conspiracy theory that had already been dismissed by his own diplomatic envoy
In comments to journalists in Athens, where he was meeting with Greek leaders, Mr. Pompeo said it was the "duty" of the Trump administration to pursue whether efforts to tamper in the United States election were rooted in Ukraine, even though the American intelligence agencies have long concluded Russia was to blame

"It is not only appropriate, but it is our duty to investigate if we think there was interference in the election of 2016," Mr. Pompeo said in Athens. "I think everyone recognizes that governments have an obligation — indeed, a duty — to ensure that elections happen with integrity, without interference from any government, whether that's the Ukrainian government or any other! Trump's Conspiracy Theories Got Him Into This - The Atlantic

Until Trump, scholars assumed that holding the White House inoculated parties from conspiracism00.!! They viewed conspiratorial thinking as a weapon of the weak, which couldn't seriously threaten the republic because its adherents wielded so little influence in government
That's what makes today's GOP so unusual and so dangerous. Never before in modern American history has a political party been this paranoid and this powerful at the same time

The real danger isn't the Republican Party's fantasies themselves. It's the realities that Trump and the GOP can use those fantasies to create.

Stephen Miller mentioned the 'deep state' conspiracy theory.
The "deep state" is back — and you may be hearing that phrase more in the future as President Donald Trump scrambles to defend the actions exposed by a whistleblower that have sparked impeachment proceedings
''I know the difference between whistleblower and a deep state operative,'' Miller said. ''This is a deep state operative, pure and simple
Trump himself tweeted on Sept. 15 that he was "fighting the Fake (Corrupt) News, the Deep State, the Democrats, and the few remaining Republicans In Name Only (RINOS, who are on mouth to mouth resuscitation), with the help of some truly great Republicans, and others
* * *

He tweeted on Sept. 21 that the country was seeing economic success "despite a Crooked and Demented Deep State, and a probably illegal Democrat/Fake News Media Partnership the likes of which the world has never seen."

How Trump's Conspiracy Theory Led to the Impeachment Crisis | Time

It took a complaint from an intelligence-community whistle-blower, released late last month, to reveal the weight of Trump’s Ukraine conspiracy theory and just how far the President has gone to support the notion that a vast network of enemies inside and outside his own government has been working against him. Trump has tried to mobilize the vast resources of his presidency–from Attorney General William Barr and the U.S. Justice Department to America’s national-security apparatus–and a team of investigative irregulars, led by his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. This band of conspiracy cops has traveled the globe in a disorderly hunt for proof of the conspiracy Trump says is arrayed against him.
