Amazon lays out its policies on political and social issues | WTVR.com

Amazon debuted a public website on Thursday outlining the e-commerce giant's views on a range of hot-button political and social issues, adding momentum to a top executive's critique of the Trump administration this week. But it also touches on more sensitive subjects, including Amazon’s facial recognition technology and its work with law enforcement, of which the company has been the recipient of sharp criticism.

“Harnessing the capabilities of advanced technology such as the cloud and machine learning are important to the ongoing safety and security of the country, its citizens, our communities, and the world,” the page insists. “We will continue to provide U.S. government and law enforcement agencies access to the most advanced technology.”

At Dallas town hall, Uber says self-driving cars will be 'better, cheaper and safer'

Uber Technologies fielded questions Tuesday night from curious members of the public about its plans to put self-driving cars on the road in Dallas. And it sought answers to a big question of its own: Do people want them here?

Starting in November, the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company plans to map and collect data about downtown Dallas streets . Uber employees will manually drive around in white Volvo SUVs equipped with self-driving technology. The company will run computer simulations of those routes and test them on a track in Pittsburgh, where its Advanced Technologies Group is based.

As early as 2020, Uber's SUVs could drive themselves around parts of Dallas — albeit with humans on board for backup, said Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber's Advanced Technologies Group. He also said Uber could bring self-driving cars to the market in 2021 or 2022.
