The Ursuline High School girls soccer team feels comfortable in its return to the Division III postseason.
The Irish, who competed in Division II the past two seasons after being in Division III in 2016, defeated Waterloo 11-0 in a sectional final Wednesday night at Youngstown State.
Ursuline, which is seeded second and improved to 10-7, will play host to third-seeded John F. Kennedy in a district semifinal on Monday.
“We play at a good level most of the time, but then to step up and compete against some strong area programs in the Division II (postseason) was difficult,” coach Roy Schmidt said. “It was a good time for us to drop down because we’ve only got 15 girls on the team this year. That doesn’t leave for much subbing.
“These girls have persevered everything that has come their way this year and we’ve had a pretty good showing! The most difficult stretch of the regular season for the Coventry High girls soccer team started with a tough loss Wednesday.
Sarah Kent scored twice and Maddie Dunnigan netted what proved to be the game-winner 47 seconds into overtime as Suffield rallied to defeat the host Patriots 3-1 in a North Central Connecticut Conference game.
Coventry led 1-0 at the break on a goal by Shannon McKeon before the Wildcats got even on Kent's first goal 1:15 into the second half. It stayed that way through the end of regulation, with the Patriots missing on a scoring opportunity in the final two minutes.
Suffield and Dunnigan made them pay in the extra session. With Coventry looking to get even, Kent put it away for the visitors midway through the second five-minute overtime.
Ava Boccasile made three saves in goal for the Wildcats. Coventry received six saves from goalie Hannah Case and strong play from defenders Reagan DeRosa and Sophie Verosky, and midfielder Kaitlyn Corrigan.

Sports events, including half-marathons and girls' softball, get grants
Five local amateur sports events being held over the next four months — ranging from two half-marathons to a girls' softball tournament — will be getting tax-funded grants.
The funding, through the Space Coast Office of Tourism's Sports & Event Grant Program, is designed to support events that bring to the area visitors, who will spend money at local hotels, restaurants and retail shops.
The grants are funded by Brevard County's 5% Tourist Development Tax on hotel rooms and other short-term rentals.

• Up to $20,000 to Tropical Sports & Wellness Solutions for the 2019 Chiro Games, a 14-sport tournament for chiropractic colleges from the United States and Canada.
The event will be held Nov. 9-10 at seven venues in Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island. It is projected to generate 715 nights of hotel room rentals.

For the first time, the Henderson County cross country championship meet took place at the Park at Flat Rock, and the course as well as the cool-weather running conditions gave way to a slew of runners nabbing personal bests for the season just ahead of conference meets next week.
North Henderson’s Brayden Robertson claimed the county boys title with a time of 17:18, with Hendersonville’s Sam Burleson (17:20) close behind in second.
“That was my fastest time this year,” said Robertson, whose second half of the race was faster than his first. “I’ve been working all season on splits and pacing myself.”
Joey Banz placed third for North with a time of 17:32, Hendersonville’s Lyric Raper (17:57) was fourth and North’s Adrian Ortiz (18:13) bested West Henderson’s Quinn Schreiber (18:13) in milliseconds for fifth place.

About a week before the seeding draw for the girls sectional tennis tournament, Olentangy Liberty teammates Maddie Atway and Dani Schoenly sat down with coach Will Thieman to discuss their postseason plans.
The juniors had worked well together in teaming to win Division I state doubles titles the past two seasons.
Schoenly was a bit surprised, then, to learn that Atway wished to forgo a potential three-peat and pursue singles in the tournament! “I would assume Maddie was just looking for a new challenge, and that's fine,” Schoenly said. “I personally like doubles better because of the whole team aspect and all, but it’s OK. It will be a little different playing singles at the state, but we all play singles year-round, anyway.”
