Crowded Space Station: There Are 9 People from 4 Different Space Agencies in Orbit Right Now |

It's a busy week at the International Space Station (ISS). With nine crewmembers currently on board, the orbiting laboratory will be unusually crowded until Thursday (Oct. 3), when three of those crewmembers are scheduled to return to Earth.

While the ISS is usually staffed by three to six astronauts and cosmonauts, there have been nine crewmembers on board the space laboratory since last Wednesday (Sept. 25), when the Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft arrived with three new crewmembers! This isn't a permanent set-up; part of the reason there are so many humans in space right now has to do with overlap in crew assignments.

Nine is certainly not the highest number of people ever stationed on the space lab. The record for the largest population on the ISS was set in 2009, when there were 13 people on board! Was A Hole In The Space Station 'Done By A Human Hand'? Russian Space Agency Refuses To Tell NASA

The Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft is pictured docked to the Rassvet module on the Russian segment of the International Space Station as the orbital complex was flying 253 miles above the North Pacific Ocean south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

What could be worse than being 250 miles above Earth in orbit only to realize that the spacecraft you're in is losing oxygen?

That's what happened on the International Space Station (ISS) back in August 2018, and though the leak was quickly fixed, it could have caused a total loss of air in just 18 days.

Now a row has broken out about the incident, with hints that Russian space agency Roscosmos now knows the cause of the leak, but will keep it secret from NASA, its main partner at the ISS.

NASA latest: Space agency unable to explain mysterious Mars sounds after quake recording |

The InSight lander, which arrived on the surface of Mars in the November 2018, recorded its first set of seismic rumblings back in April.

* * *

The Marsquakes were picked up by NASA’s Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) in May and July.

Marsquakes, the equivalent of earthquakes, are caused by movements in the planet's interior, possibly from volcanic hotspots.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said: “Both suggest that the Martian crust is like a mix of the Earth's crust and the Moon’s.

"Mars, with its cratered surface, is slightly more Moon-like, with seismic waves ringing for a minute or so, whereas quakes on Earth can come and go in seconds."

Scientists hope that the seismic waves will reveal the deep inner structure of Mars for the first time.

This Is China's New Spacecraft to Take Astronauts to the Moon (Photos) | Space

China is developing a next-generation spacecraft for human spaceflight that would allow astronauts to travel to the moon and other deep-space destinations.

And while the country plans to soon begin constructing a modular space station , China is apparently already looking beyond to eventual missions to the moon — and potentially beyond.

A recent promo video from the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a state-owned spacecraft and satellite manufacturer, has given us the best look yet at the new-generation crewed craft, which is capable of deep-space travel.

NASA news: Space agency and Uber team-up to develop flying cars | Science | News | Express.co.uk

Abby Tabor, from NASA's Ames Research Center, said: “A new future for city transport is in the works at NASA – a future where both people and packages will take to the air.

“And this week, the agency is working with partner company Uber to evaluate certain things we already know and others we still need to invent to manage this expected new air traffic.

“The goal, known as Urban Air Mobility or UAM, is a safe and efficient air transportation system where everything from small package-delivery drones to passenger-carrying air taxis operate over populated areas – from small towns to largest cities.”

San Francisco-based Uber has joined the ride by developing an “urban aviation rideshare network”.

The main concern is how many flying cars, delivery drones and even larger vehicles will safely occupy the skies.
