Abu Dhabi: Even as it basks in the glory of the first successful space flight by an Emirati astronaut, the UAE's space regulator on Tuesday launched a national strategy and investment plan that prioritises local expertise building, space tourism and space exploration missions.
At the launch ceremony in the capital, the UAE Space Agency also signed an agreement to promote Dubai South as the economic zone of choice for companies in the sector, and another to develop space start-ups in collaboration with innovation hub, Kryptolabs.
"This strategy aims to support the realisation of the UAE's vision in the space sector with the various elements that fall under its umbrella, including science, technology, applications and services, whereas the investment plan seeks to increase the sector's contribution to the UAE economy," said Mohammad Al Ahbabi, director general at the Agency.

Is a Nigerian Astronaut Lost in Space?
In October 2019, we came across a decidedly bizarre version of the scam. This time, Nigerian astronaut Abacha Tunde was reportedly stuck in space and his cousin, Dr. Bakare Tunde, was asking you, the reader, for $3 million to get him home.

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved! NASA news: Why space agency is 'stumped over cosmos phenomenon' – Neil deGrasse Tyson |
Dr Tyson is an advocate for expanding the operations of NASA, arguing that the public has a tendency to overestimate the space agency’s budget.
In 2017 he was interviewed by Larry King, where he was pressed on why NASA needs more support and how they can achieve their goals.

“However, we look out in the universe and we look at all of the forces that are driving what is going on.
“And if you add up all the stumping phenomena in the cosmos and this amounts to the dark matter.”
He added: “We don’t know, 85 percent of all the gravity in the universe has a source about which we know nothing, we call it dark matter.
“With dark energy, the universe is accelerating in its expansion against the wishes of the collective gravity of all the galaxies.

European Space Agency probe captures new photos of 700km dried-up river system on Mars | Euronews
While you might think of the surface of Mars as an other-worldly landscape, new photographs show it doesn't look as different as we might think to our own environment.
The European Space Agency (ESA) has released pictures of an ancient, dried-up river system that stretches out for nearly 700 kilometres across the surface of Mars, which is surprisingly earth-like in appearance.
One of the longest valley networks on the planet, around 3.5 billion to 4 billion years ago, the vast valleys were filled with water forming large rivers.
The Nirgal Vallis region shown in the new images from ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft lies just south of the planet’s equator.
This area of Mars' landscape was shaped by a mix of flowing water and impacts where rocks from space crashed into the martian plane.
NASA's first all-female spacewalk will now take place this week
NASA's first all-female spacewalk has been rescheduled for Thursday or Friday morning, the space agency announced today.
Astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir had been scheduled to make the excursion from the International Space Station on Oct. 21, but NASA changed the date so that they could make an urgent repair to the station's power system.
"@Space_Station update: our first all-female spacewalk with @Astro_Christina and @Astro_Jessica will be Thursday or Friday to replace a faulty battery charge-discharge unit," NASA chief Jim Bridenstine said Tuesday on Twitter .
The astronauts will replace a "battery charge/discharge unit" that failed Oct. 11, after new lithium-ion batteries were installed during a previous spacewalk!
