School Sports Roundup: St.

The St. Mary’s girls soccer team punched its ticket to the state tournament Monday afternoon with a close 3-2 win over Catholic Central League foe Archbishop Williams at Manning Field.

“It’s always a goal of ours to make it into the state tournament, so it feels great to check off that accomplishment,” said St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley. “We really had to fight for the win in this one and come from behind, so it felt a little extra special.”

Emily Egan came through with the game winner for the Spartans, knocking home a penalty kick late in the second half. Goalkeeper Liza Brown had 12 saves and stopped a crucial penalty kick in the win.

Bridget O’Connell scored the lone goal for Peabody, while Aja Alimonti had one assist. Colleen Crotty, Maddy Scacchi, Emma Darling, Meghan Billingsley and Jordyn Collins played well defensively in the loss. Goalkeeper Emma Bloom had seven saves.

Suter's goal with 2:46 left gave the host Spartans a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Canton in North Central Connecticut Conference action.

The Spartans led 1-0 at halftime before Canton (4-5-1) scored twice in less than a minute to take an early second-half edge. Dalessio responded seconds later for Somers to tie it and set the stage for Suter.

Mallory Murdza had two assists for the Spartans. Goalie Bianca Green made four saves and received strong defensive support from Deidre Dalessio and Sam Brown.

STAFFORD 3, ROCKVILLE 2. In Stafford, freshman Camden Smith scored the game-winning goal with 1:46 left as the host Bulldogs pushed their unbeaten streak to eight in NCCC action.

Senior Anna Murphy scored twice for Stafford (7-2-3), which is 6-0-2 in its last eight games. The South Side girls soccer program began the season with just 12 girls on the roster. Monday night, the Rams fell just short of seeing their season continue, as Serra Catholic defeated South Side 1-0 in the WPIAL playoffs.

NORTH FAYETTE TWP. – When the South Side girls soccer program took the field against North Catholic back in August for the team’s first scrimmage of the season, head coach Lee McCutcheon had only 12 players available.
